My dog has soft poop. What causes loose stools and diarrhea in dogs?

Soft stools could be from the soft foods- they contain more water- but if the stools are more like diarrhea, I would recommend looking into the cause. There could be a medical reason for diarrhea, like parasites or a digestive issue that needs to be addressed. If he used to eat hard food and now only eats soft I would recommend having a vet look at his teeth to make sure there isn’t something painful going on that’s causing the diet change. Soft stool has multiple causes. It may be gastrointestinal upset or inflammation, intestinal parasites or due to dietary indiscretions just to name a few. As long as Remy is acting normally, you don't necessarily need to take him to your veterinarian. You should submit a stool sample though to diagnose intestinal parasites. Try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet. If the soft stool does not resolve or if Remy develops lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or vomiting them have him examined by your veterinarian.

It is possible that Sophie has a dietary indiscretion to the current diet or treats you are feeding her. I would recommend trying a different meat protein and see if this helps or try a sensitive stomach formula to see if this helps as well. Sometimes switching to a completely different brand helps as well. If the problem persists, I would recommend having a veterinarian test her stool for fecal parasites just to be on the safe side. This could be due to a number of things, most like;y him eating something that disagreed with him, something too rich that he isn't used to eating. If you changed his dog food recently or introduced wet food to his diet this could be what started it. Other possibilities include parasites, food allergies, or bacterial infection. Try feeding him a bland diet for a few days, plain cooked white rice mixed with an equal part of plain boiled chicken breast, unseasoned, or plain hamburger, cooked and the fat rinsed off. If the symptoms persist or get worse, including developing new symptoms like diarrhea, lethargy and loss of appetite, get him seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam and fecal analysis.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tiny! Even though your other dog handles the food fine doesn't mean that Tiny will. Tiny could have a food allergy causing chronic loose stool. Other possible causes are: pancreatic conditions, inflammatory bowel disease. The easiest thing to do it to change Tiny's food to an OTC novel protein diet. Chicken is the most common allergic protein. Try a venison or all fish diet. You need to give the diet 2-3 months to decide if it worked or not and you may need to try a prescription diet before determining that Tiny doesn't have food allergies. If Tylosin hasn't been tried you can discuss that with your Vet and a probiotic. I like Purina Fortiflora. Inflammatory bowel disease is diagnosed off ultrasound and biopsy. Pancreatic insufficiency is diagnosed from special blood tests (B12, folate, TLI, PLI). I hope this helps and I wish Tiny the best!
