Why is my dog's poop soft, red, or unusual? What should I do?

A bland diet may result in soft stool with the appearance in the images. You can try transitioning Bear slowly to his regular diet. A good quality large breed puppy food my help put weight on him. Have him examined by your veterinarian if the weight loss persists. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites, bacterial overgrowth, maldigestion or malabsorption disorders. Make sure he isn't getting into anything else, such as bird seed.

From the picture it does not look like there is blood in Bruno's stool. The stool does look a little loose/unformed which could indicate colitis. Colitis is an inflammation of the colon and could be caused by many different things such as intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease or a food allergy/intolerance. Severe diarrhea can cause weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration. I would recommend having a fecal performed at your vet to rule out intestinal parasites. If the diarrhea becomes worse then you may need to bring Bruno in to be evaluated. He may need a diet change or antibiotics or probiotics to help clear up the soft stools.

Soft stool has multiple causes. It may be gastrointestinal upset or inflammation, intestinal parasites or due to dietary indiscretions just to name a few. The color of the vomit could be caused by some blood (e.g. an injury in the esophagus) or coloring of the food he ate or severe inflammation somewhere in the gastrointestinal tract. Diarrhea and throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Max for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or stays bloody, or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Toby might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 12 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If the problem remains unchanged, take him to the vet to get treatment.

As long as the stool was normal or close to normal, you can begin the transition back to the regular diet. Ideally, it should take 7-10 days to transition back. See how Teddy does tomorrow. If the stool is getting looser or more bloody, go back to a bland diet until it isn't, then restart the transition. Call your vet also and let him or her know that Teddy has loose/bloody stool again.
