Flatulence in dogs is most often caused by the food the dog eats. It is not something dangerous, it just means that your dog has intestinal bacteria that enjoy this food and make a lot of smelly gas. You may want to change the brand of complete puppy food for small dogs. Transition slowly over a full week. Should your puppy have diarrhea or appear ill, take it to your veterinarian for an exams.

Flatulence is often dietary related or could be an early sign of gastrointestinal inflammation. As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.
I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Based on your description and seeing that she is 6 months of age, it is likely that this is a dietary sensitivity. This could also be an imbalance of the normal intestinal bacteria. Many cases of GI upset such as vomiting, diarrhea or excessive flatulence can be directly linked to the diet or not enough healthy good bacteria in the gut. I would suggest transitioning to a different diet such as Natural Balance, Royal Canin or Science Diet. I would feed the new food for at least 4 weeks to see if this helps with the flatulence. If it does not, I would switch to a different food a second time and if after the second food switch the flatulence continues then I would recommend adding in a probiotic such as Purina fortiflora which can be found online or at your local pet store quite easily. My puppy is gassy. What foods or products can help her feel better?

SHe is likely gassy because of indigestion from the food or she could also have intestinal parasites. I would recommend changing the quality of food if that is an area for improvement. Some good qualty foods to consider are Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba or Purina. This can help improve Junie's digestion. I would also recommend exercising Junie daily to help her GI tract motility. And lastly giving her a probiotic daily can help support her GI flora. Excessive bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria leads to excess gas production. I hope that your puppy Junie resolves her gassy state soon. Best wishes and take care.

My dog has foul-smelling gas but no other symptoms. What can I do?

It's possible something in the diet is not setting well with her. It's also possible there is a bacterial imbalance, parasites or the wrong kind of fiber. Also, home made diets are generally difficult to balance which can lead to problems over time. For the best nutrition, I recommend to work with a veterinary nutritionist who can formula a good diet. I also recommend to rule out parasites by having Luna's stool checked. A probiotic may help. Switching her diet to a high quality, commercial diet that has all the required nutrients and required fiber may help too. I recommend Royal Canin. Best of luck.

My old dog has terrible gas. What can I do to stop the smell?

By far the most common cause of too much gas in a dog is due to dietary indiscretion or difficulty in the digestion of its current diet. I would recommend gradually changing Elmo's food to something different over the course of About a Week. You can also use human products such as Gas-X two help reduce the amount of flatulence that Elmo is having. Gas-X is not a drug that is labeled for dogs and cats so there is no agreed-upon dose. I would suggest doing some reading online to find the dose that you are most comfortable administering. Other less common causes of increased flatulence would include more serious diseases such as gastrointestinal infectious or inflammatory process, liver disease, or pancreatitis. Hope this helps!

My 7-month puppy has bad gas and runny poop. What should I do?

Without seeing Diesel it is hard to say. I would first make sure he is intestinal parasite free. There a several different parasites and there is not one deworming medicine that treats them all. I recommend bringing a stool sample to your vet to look at under the microscope. Otherwise the issues could be coming from his food. The most common reasons are bacterial imbalance issues, a poor response to the fiber in the diet or parasites. You may try switching the food. I recommend Royal Canin because it has a great fiber blend. You can start them on a probiotic - Purina FortiFlora is a great one.
