My 7-month puppy has bad gas and runny poop. What should I do?

Hello! Internal parasites are very common in young dogs and can cause a lot of gas and diarrhea like you are describing. If the diarrhea is very watery/runny or he is having a lot of accidents then I would say you should take him in sooner. If he seems otherwise pretty happy and healthy you can probably wait until the vet visit on the 3rd. Be sure to have the vet run a fecal test. The dewormer that is usually given at puppy visits will not take care of all the possible types of parasites he could have. I would feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.

I would have him checked out by your vet for his puppy shots, and they will likely want to check a stool sample for parasites and potentially prescribe a dewormer.

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! I don't think you need to be super concerned with Diesel. I recommend starting him on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed him 3 1/2 cups per day until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic. I like Purina Fortiflora. If the diarrhea persists, worsens, you see blood or he starts vomiting get him looked at by your Vet. If you changed his dog food recently or introduced wet food to his diet this could be what started it. Other possibilities include parasites, food allergies, or bacterial infection. Try feeding him a bland diet for a few days, plain cooked white rice mixed with an equal part of plain boiled chicken breast, unseasoned, or plain hamburger, cooked and the fat rinsed off.
