My dog has foul-smelling gas but no other symptoms. What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 45 lbs

Luna is passing foul gas lately. She has no other symptoms. Her reports for Liver Functioning Test from last month are fine. She is on chicken and vegetables diet. Are there any recommendations to control the problem? Thank you.

It's possible something in the diet is not setting well with her. It's also possible there is a bacterial imbalance, parasites or the wrong kind of fiber. Also, home made diets are generally difficult to balance which can lead to problems over time. For the best nutrition, I recommend to work with a veterinary nutritionist who can formula a good diet.
I also recommend to rule out parasites by having Luna's stool checked. A probiotic may help. Switching her diet to a high quality, commercial diet that has all the required nutrients and required fiber may help too. I recommend Royal Canin. Best of luck.

Poor Sophie! It's not normal to have constantly runny stool and excessive gas, so I agree that it sounds like something isn't right. She may have a food allergy or intolerance to something in her diet, an illness like inflammatory bowel disease or EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency), or some type of intestinal parasite. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do a fecal exam and may also recommend blood work or other testing to check for some of the other problems I mentioned. Treatment options that can be helpful for dogs like this may include daily probiotics, a diet trial with a prescription hypoallergenic food like Hills z/d or Purina HA, or prescription medication such as antibiotics and/or steroids, depending on the diagnosis.

My dog has extreme gas. His current diet isn't working. What helps?

Hi there. I suggest you use a probiotic for Bentley. Fortiflora is my favorite but you can use any probiotic made for dogs (no human products or dairy). I would give it daily for one month to see if there are any changes. The probiotic adds "good bacteria" to his intestinal tract that may quiet the gas. Dog's sensitive stomach, smelly poop/gas. How to fix without changing food?

If he is a young dog it is possible that he has a mild food allergy or an easily upset stomach (sometimes this is irritable bowl syndrome). Typically strong smelling gas in from the diet. I think slowly switching Ziggys food to maybe a different protein source of purina would help calm down or stop the gas. However, if you want to try an over the counter probiotic every day in the food and see if helping the good bacteria grow improved the gas. Do not forget to have a fecal checked for parasites just incase! hope that helps

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend taking Poli to the vet with a fresh stool sample to rule out intestinal parasites and other health concerns. If negative, I would recommend changing her diet to something less rich. In the US, I recommend Science Diet or Purina One Smartblend. Why is my 12-year-old Briard suddenly so gassy? What should I do?

If this is the only sign you could try changing to a highly digestible diet (like Hill’s i/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat) as long as she doesn’t have any food intolerances or diseases requiring a therapeutic diet. Sometimes I also have people try a probiotic like Fortiflora. If she has also had a decrease in appetite, diarrhea or weight loss you should see your veterinarian.
