My 6-month-old puppy's poop gets runny later. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Whippet | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 15 days old

My 6month old whippet has started having diahorrea on occasions, if she doesn't have a poo for a while like overnight the first poo she does is firm and normal looking but as she does more poos throughout the day they get runny. She is always hungry also, was wormed about a month ago. Is well in herself though. Is this normal? Thanks.

I would recommend switching the diet that has more fiber and that might agree with her a bit better. If after switching the diet and treats, she is still having problems with her poop, I would recommend bringing a poop sample to your veterinarian and have it tested for parasites. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions / concerns. Also, be sure to check and see if she is eating any plants or other abnormal things intermittently that may be causing the diarrhea.

It sounds like Cheeky is straining to produce the diarrhea. A lot of time this accompanied by urgency, an increased frequency of defecations and potentially blood in the stool. Assuming she is acting normal otherwise and not having blood in her stool, it would be ok hold food for 12-18hrs (while providing water). If resting her GI tract does not help or she is acting sick, then I would recommend she sees her veterinarian. Fecal testing will likely be recommended or potentially a diet modification. Good luck!

Hi there! The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Daisey evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start her on anti-diarrhea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your girl!

Why is my 12-week puppy constantly pooping thin, stringy stool?

She could have a parasite or an infection causing the problem. The best thing would be to have her examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. Your vet can test a stool sample for parasites and then prescribe medications to treat the diarrhea. She may need to a dewormer, antibiotic, or other medications. You could also add a probiotic to her diet and feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice for a few days and see if that helps.

Is my 6-week-old kitten's runny poop normal after eating adult food?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It appears that there is more mucous than I would like to see in the stool. This could be due to the diet and it could also be due to intestinal parasites. I would recommend switching food to a kitten food and see if that helps. If it does not improve and continues to progress, I would recommend having a veterinarian test her poop sample to check for intestinal parasites. I hope this helps! My 6-month puppy has runny poop and a drop of blood. Should I worry?

Thank you for contact Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Luke's runny poop could be caused by intestinal worms (if he's not up to date with his deworming treatments), or it could be a GI illness or he ate something rotten. The drop of blood in his poop could due to to irritation of the GI tract from the diarrhea. Since's his poop is normal now, just keep an eye on him for now. If you keep seeing blood in his poop or he has runny poops, I'd take him into the vet. I hope this helps!

Why is my 4-week-old puppy's poop soft and smells like metal?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Soft stools can be normal as they transition from formula to kibble or canned food. If she is otherwise doing well, this may be ok. If it ever becomes consistent diarrhea, have her evaluated by a veterinarian before her scheduled appointment. Keep in mind that it may be best to continue the formula until she is 6 weeks old. Why is my puppy's stool watery after new food and eating paper?

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Puppies frequently acquire roundworms from their mother or environment. The paper likely would not cause an issue unless it was a large quantity. Make sure he continues to eat and drink normally. A bland diet and/or a prescribed dewormer may firm up his stool. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting or persistent diarrhea.

My new puppy has runny, bloody, mucousy poop. Should I worry?

This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.
