My puppy has red gums around her teeth. What is it & how to help?

Hello, that looks like gingival hyperplasia. This a common disease in dogs with dental disease. It is typically benign, but may cause some discomfort and bleeding if it ever gets too large. It can also be removed by your veterinarian during's Piper's next dental cleaning. Contact your veterinarian and have them evaluate her for an oral exam and determine if she needs to have her teeth cleaned. This will also serve as a way to check her gums and determine of the overgrowth of her gingiva needs to be trimmed or removed. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It appears to be some moderate gingivitis and tartar. The tooth underneath the red area may be affected, and may not. It would take an xray of that area to know for sure. I recommend getting her examined by your veterinarian and planning a dental cleaning and oral x-rays.

I'm sorry to hear that Tobias has inflamed gums! Without being able to examine him or at least see a photo of the problem, it's hard to say what might be causing this. He may have an infected tooth, a growth of some kind, or generalized periodontal disease. Most of these problems will require veterinary attention to address properly, so I would recommend having him examined by a vet as soon as you are able to so that the problem can be treated. In the meantime, you can try using an over-the-counter dental rinse for dogs if you like - Vetoquinol Dentahex rinse is a good choice for general oral health. This will not treat the underlying problem that is causing the inflammation, but may help to make Tobias a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

Bleeding gums can be an indication of periodontal disease. Ideally, Tahoe should be physically examined by your veterinarian. She may need a dental cleaning. You can brush daily using a pet approved toothpaste and toothbrush. This will slow the progression of any existing periodontal disease and accumulation of plaque. Brushing will not remove plaque, especially if it is under the gum line.

This could definitely be due to teething. They often get irritated and bleeding gums at this time and it's really not a problem. Young dogs almost never have dental disease, so I would not be worried at this time. This problem should resolve in the next two months. It's great that you are brushing!! Keep it up and you will definitely reduce his chances of having teeth and gum disease in the future.

There could be something going on internally, like a blood problem, or he could have bad teeth causing gingivitis and dental disease. Truly your dog needs to have dental cleaning under anesthesia to evaluate these teeth and clean up all the tartar and around the gumline. Unfortunately most of the time loose teeth need to be removed and it also sounds like your dog could have some gingival recession that needs to be evaluated. I would make an appointment with your vet for an oral exam and most likely they will want you to schedule a dental procedure. Brushing teeth at home is great and will slow buildup of tartar, but it isn't going to fix the problems that Tiger has right now.
