My dog has inflamed, red gums. What should I do to help him?

My dog has a slightly inflamed gum. What can I do for this?

I'm sorry to hear that Tobias has inflamed gums! Without being able to examine him or at least see a photo of the problem, it's hard to say what might be causing this. He may have an infected tooth, a growth of some kind, or generalized periodontal disease. Most of these problems will require veterinary attention to address properly, so I would recommend having him examined by a vet as soon as you are able to so that the problem can be treated.

In the meantime, you can try using an over-the-counter dental rinse for dogs if you like - Vetoquinol Dentahex rinse is a good choice for general oral health. This will not treat the underlying problem that is causing the inflammation, but may help to make Tobias a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

This inflamed gum might be due to gingivitis, which can be common in senior dogs. The best thing you can do is have Tobias seen by a vet for it, as this cannot be treated at home. He likely needs a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing to treat it. Dogs like humans also need regular dental care to keep their teeth in the best condition, and your vet is the person to do this. I would have him seen by a vet on Monday to discuss getting this dental procedure done :-)

Hello, sorry to hear about Vega. What you are seeing seems to be gingivitis which is associated with periodontal disease. To improve this, you can brush your dog's teeth daily and provide dental care products from your local pet stores (dental treats, dental chews, etc). Eventually however, Vega should have an oral exam by your veterinarian to assess if a dental cleaning needs to be performed as well. Hope this helps and best of luck.

The canine tooth looks like it might have a little evidence of gingivitis but it can be difficult to tell from a picture. I also would not prescribe antibiotics for dental disease in most situations - if the tooth is infected removing it is the best treatment option. Even though the tooth probably will fall out there may be other diseased teeth since it can be difficult to evaluate the extent of disease without sedation - you may want to ask your vet about a dental cleaning or if your vet does not do this procedure see another vet.

Senior dog with swollen gums & heart condition. What can I do at home?

Her gums are likely inflamed because she has tartar underneath her gumline. She needs a dental cleaning to scale off all that tartar, then this will resolve the inflammation. I would suggest getting Chia an echocardiogram to see if she can still have surgery despite her heart condition. Many heart disease pets can go under general anesthesia. I would consider getting another vet for a second opinion here and see if you can get Chia's echocardiogram scheduled asap. I hope that your can get Chia's echo and dental scheduled soon. I would suggest using a water additive from your local pet store until then to help flush out her gums and keep the bacteria load down. Best wishes and take care!

Hello, that looks like gingival hyperplasia. This a common disease in dogs with dental disease. It is typically benign, but may cause some discomfort and bleeding if it ever gets too large. It can also be removed by your veterinarian during's Piper's next dental cleaning. Contact your veterinarian and have them evaluate her for an oral exam and determine if she needs to have her teeth cleaned. This will also serve as a way to check her gums and determine of the overgrowth of her gingiva needs to be trimmed or removed. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is no home remedy for red gums. You need to take Charlie to a veterinarian to determine the cause of the red gums. There could be something going on internally, like a blood problem, or he could have bad teeth causing gingivitis and dental disease.
