My new puppy has red eyes, low energy, and won't eat. Is she sick?

Hopefully, this is a viral condition that will be self limiting. However, if the puppy is not adequately vaccinated I would advise you have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible and tested for parvo.

Not sure if the red eyes may be related to the constipation and vomiting, but these signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). From these symptoms, there could be many things going on, but I am very concerned that Chico is very sick. A puppy sleeps more than an adult, but they should have a high activity level and eat well. I think Chico should get checked out by a vet. There are many things that could be causing his symptoms, including hypoglycemia, bacterial or viral infection (such as parvo virus), internal medical illness, intestinal parasites, etc. After examination, the vet should be able to give you an idea of what is going on, or what diagnostics should be run, such as intestinal parasite screening, bloodwork, parvo test, etc.

I don't think it's necessarily something to be worried about at this stage. It is not uncommon for huskies and husky-type dogs to be picky/light eaters. She may be low energy because she is unsure of her surroundings. You have only had her one day. Don't force her or push her to be social if she doesn't want to be. If she is vomiting or having diarrhea she should see a veterinarian ASAP. If she is of normal body weight I would not be concerned. Many dogs these days are overfed and too fat. I doubt she will be starve herself. In my entire veterinary career I think I have only told 1 or 2 people that their dogs were too skinny. It is very rare. I suggest you get a scale and weigh her once a week and keep a log. When Amelia goes to the vet next take the log with you and you can discuss it with them. Has she been dewormed? Is she up to date on her vaccinations? She is supposed to have a round of vaccines at 8 weeks of age, 12 weeks of age and 16 weeks of age. Red eyes can be caused by just about anything including: allergic conjunctivitis, corneal hemorrhage, raised 3rd eyelid, etc. These are all treated differentyl and typically require a vet visit to treat. Weight loss in puppies is typically caused by intestinal parasites. I would suggest giving him a broad spectrum dewormer from your local pet store or feed store OR getting his stool tested by your vet is ideal to determine if he does have worms and what specific dewormer he needs. I am unsure what brand of food you are feeding now, but I would also recommend feeding him a high quality large breed puppy food such as Royal canin, Hill's Science Diet, Evo or Eukanuba. Hi Catherine! I'm sorry Gabbanna isn't doing well. It is concerning that she is lethargic and not eating, but this could be due to teething. She is at the age where puppies teeth, and that can make them lethargic and not want to eat due to pain. Try soaking her dry food in warm water to make it softer for her to eat, or you can give her wet food. I would get her a teething toy from the pet store that you can freeze in the freezer, as that will give her something hard to chew on it and the cold will be soothing to her gums. As for her runny eye, that can be a sign of an eye infection, allergy, or injury to the eyes. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Gabbanna into a vet right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing her eye to weep and can prescribe medication for it. The vet can also examine her to see if she is teething or if there is another cause behind her lethargy and not eating, such as a systemic illness.

Poor Yoni! Unfortunately without seeing her in person, it is impossible for me to say for sure what is going on. Red eyes can indicate an infection, an ulcer on the eye, or simple allergies. You could try Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps. You can also try some artificial tears drops in both eyes 3-4 times per day. See link below for Benadryl dosing. An increase in urination could be an indication of a UTI. They don't always lick their privates when they have a UTI. She is also a very young dog so it could be behavioral. If these issues aren't improving, I would strongly recommend to have her seen by your vet. Your vet can determine if there is any infection or scratch/ulcer in the eyes and also determine whether she has any true urinary issues or if it is just behavioral.
