My puppy has a red donut-shaped lump on his belly. What is it?

I do recommend all new lumps or bumps be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if they are potentially malignant (cancerous) or not. In the picture, it appears that the affected skin is bumpy and then there is quite a bit of redness around the edge. It’s possible that it could be a wart-like growth, but because of the amount of inflammation (causing the redness) going on, I would recommend taking Mac to the vet for a closer look. The vet will also look closely at all of Mac’s other skin (and mouth and other mucous membranes) to see if there are any other affected areas. They may be able to diagnose or have a better guess as to what’s going on, and discuss treatment options if any need to happen. Until he sees the vet, it would be helpful to have him wear an e-collar/cone so he can’t lick the area anymore. Licking will increase the inflammation and can skew how the vet evaluates the area. Hi. Unfortunately it is impossible to tell without an examination and testing of the lump. But, it appears to me to be what's called a histiocytoma. These are benign growths that appear in young pets usually under the age of 4 and usually around the age of 2. They are red, raised, sometimes dry and ulcerated looking. We are benign growths that usually go away on their own within a few months. I would recommend though having it double checked by your veterinarian. Good luck.

I would highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This is usually treated with local therapy with drainage, flushing and and debridement as well as systemic antibiotics. Good luck and have a good day!

Congratulations on your new baby! I have a dog named Theo too! Good choice of name! We very commonly see superficial skin infections (an overgrowth of normal bacteria) on the bellies of young puppies. They typically start as red bumps that rupture and form a crust, then leave a darkened ring for a little while until they heal. If that is what is going on with Theo, I would expect the dark areas to get lighter then resolve. If that is not the case, then I would have your vet examine him. I hope that was helpful. A warm compress may promote drainage. Use an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking. Keep the area clean and dry. If it doesn't heal after rupture or if it spreads, have Muffin examined by your veterinarian.

That is certainly in the area where the inguinal lymph node lies. The red area there looks like a possible tick bite dermatitis. I would recommend starting with antihistamines and let your vet take a look at this area. If your pet also has a fever, then a course of antibiotics should be considered in case there is an infectious component here. A tick titer may also be considered if your pet is exposed to ticks and not on prevention. I hope that your pet's skin issue resolves soon! Best wishes and take care.
