Stray puppy poop has white stringy bits. Is it worms or serious?

Congrats on your new puppy! I'm wondering if you mean a deworming treatment for intestinal worms. Heartworms aren't treated by antibiotics, it is treated by Immiticide, nor are they seen in the anus. Heartworms reside in the blood vessels around the heart and lungs. You may be seeing roundworms in Alvin's anus, which can happen when a dog is being treated for intestinal worms. He needs at least two deworming treatments given two weeks apart to kill all the worms. If you don't think it's intestinal worms, then I would have him seen by a vet to diagnose what this white string is so he can be treated.

Poor Bruno! It’s possible it’s related to the deworming but it’s also possible there’s another cause such as a viral infection, dietary indiscretion, parasites or bacteria over growth. Usually a reaction to an oral medication will happen within 24 hours. Since Bruno is young and small, I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian today if possible. Small breed puppies are susceptible to low blood sugar and this will cause seizures and can be fatal if not treated. If puppies don’t eat, they run the risk of developing low blood sugar. He is not feeling well and that’s why he’s not eating. It’s always best to be safe with these little ones. Offer him cooked chicken breast and plain boiled white rice. Canned puppy food would also be a good option. If he shows any signs of significant lethargy, trouble walking or seizures, smear something sugary like Karo syrup on his gums and get to the vet’s office immediately. Unfortunately, many products now have xylitol in them to act as a sweetener and this is toxic to dogs so you want to read your labels. I hope he starts feeling better quickly! Your puppies have roundworms. This is quite normal for puppies this age and easily treated, You will need to get some puppy wormer from either your vet or a pet shop and treat them, preferably now and again in 2-3 weeks.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Worms do cause diarrhea and a very high worm burden (amount) can cause severe disease. However, if the puppy is eating, playing and drinking, and is acting normally, then you can wait until tomorrow. I would just inform the new owners about the worms, and have them bring Dan to the vet right away. The vet will get proper deworming performed, as well as vaccines. Best of luck with them!

That does not look like a normal intestinal worm. Intestinal worms are white or light yellow. I suspect this is something he ate. Wrap it up in a baggie and take it to be examined by your veterinarian. To be safe, have the store checked for worms since some rooms can be spread to humans. It's hard to tell from the photo, but if they are round and "spaghetti-like", they are probably roundworms. Most over the counter dewormers can take care of roundworms, however your vet can also prescribe deworming medications, and you can bring in a sample of them to your vet if needed to be identified in person.
