My puppy's poop has clear jelly. Is this normal? What should I do?

What is clear jelly on my dogs poop? Is that normal for a dog to poop? He poops 3x this morning. What should I do?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You are seeing some mucous on the stool. Mucous usually occurs when there is some inflammation in the colon. In a young dog, it could be parasites, something odd he ate, or it indicates a sensitivity to something like an allergen. If he is feeling well, eating normally, then I would not be too concerned. If he has not had a stool check done, I would definitely have it evaluated by your veterinarian. He may need to have his diet changed, but I would not just start buying different puppy foods. If you continue to see the mucous, please call your vet. Take care.

These signs (bloody tinged jelly material) could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.
I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. It sounds to me like there was mucous in the stool along with the blood. This can be seen with diarrhea and if the blood was a small amount, I would not be too concerned by this, especially if he recently was switched to a different food. I would recommend feeding a bland diet as outlined below and then transitioning back to the new dog food over a 7 day period. If the problem continues or starts back up after reintroducing the new dog food after the bland diet, I would recommend feeding a different dog food altogether. If there is still no improvement, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Tito so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! I would bring a fecal sample in to a veterinarian and have them check for intestinal parasites so that the most appropriate treatment can be given. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, it looks like Snowy is having some diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, ranging from dietary indiscretion (he ate something he shouldn't have), diet change, gastrointestinal parasites (worms), or other organ system diseases like liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, etc. I recommend feeding Snowy a bland diet such as boiled (unseasoned) chicken or hamburger and rice, in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 3-4 days, to help firm up his stools. You can also try adding in a small amount of Metamucil (original, unflavored) powder to this food. Metamucil is an over-the-counter fiber supplement for people that we often use to help dogs with diarrhea. He would likely benefit from about 1/4 teaspoon of Metamucil in his food twice a day. If you are not noticing an improvement in his diarrhea after 2-3 days, I recommend bringing him (and a sample of his stool) to your veterinarian. At that time, a fecal analysis can be performed, and any other diagnostics as needed. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck with Snowy!

You are right to be concerned. This is not normal and I'm also concerned about this bloody, mucusy poop. Since he's feeling fine you can wait until tomorrow but I would bring Max in for an exam and have them check a fecal sample in the morning. This can be from many reasons including parasites, a reaction to a drug, colitis, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or something causing bleeding in the intestinal tract. They will also want to check to make sure he is hydrated and not anemic and that his blood is clotting normally. Once they get a diagnosis they can then start the appropriate treatment. Why does my dog's poop have mucus or look like jelly sometimes?

Mucus generally means inflammation and this can come from parasites (like worms and giardia), a diet not right for Lucy's body or bacterial over growth. A bland diet for 3 days can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A probiotic may also be beneficial. I recommend Purina FortiFlora if you can find it. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. Lastly, if the mucus continues after 2 weeks, have Lucy checked for worms and giardia by her veterinarian. I hope this helps.

Why is my dog's stool red and jelly-like, and anal glands leaking?

If the blood and mucous is coming from his anal gland, he may have an infected anal gland. If that is the case, he may need an infusion or oral antibiotics to resolve it. My dog has jello-like poop. Is it worms, mucus, or something else?

This doesn't have the typical appearance of a worm, which are normally whitish in color and thin or the size of a grain of rice. It is possible this is mucus in the stool, which can look gelatinous, or something your dog ate. Tapeworms are not transmitted directly from one dog to another, and require an intermediate host depending on the type of tapeworm, such as mice or fleas.

Anytime stool stays in the colon longer than normal (such as with mild constipation), it can become a little dry, so there will sometimes be mucous present from the colon secondary to irritation. That would also explain the small amount of red as well. If Loki develops diarrhea, is not continuing to pass stool normally, is not eating well, or is passing bloody stool, then I would recommend having your vet examine him again. Good luck!
