My dog has bloody, jelly-like poop but is acting normal. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 4 lbs

This morning my dog Max seemed to have a little bright red blood in his stool, with what seemed like a jelly like consistency. This evening it seems there was dark red blood in his stool and still jelly like. He is acting fine eating and drinking, but I’m just concerned!

You are right to be concerned. This is not normal and I'm also concerned about this bloody, mucusy poop. Since he's feeling fine you can wait until tomorrow but I would bring Max in for an exam and have them check a fecal sample in the morning. This can be from many reasons including parasites, a reaction to a drug, colitis, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or something causing bleeding in the intestinal tract. They will also want to check to make sure he is hydrated and not anemic and that his blood is clotting normally. Once they get a diagnosis they can then start the appropriate treatment. If the blood and mucous is coming from his anal gland, he may have an infected anal gland. If that is the case, he may need an infusion or oral antibiotics to resolve it. My dog has bloody, jelly-like stools for days. What should I do?

I'm sorry to hear Cooper is having issues. Bloody stool like you are describing can have a variety of causes, including dietary indiscretion, gastroenteritis, a virus, or an overgrowth of clostridium bacteria in the colon, among others. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his diarrhea, have any necessary testing done, and get started on any treatment (antidiarrheal, probiotic) that may be needed to help resolve it. I'm sorry to hear Frank is having an issue! If he is otherwise acting normally you can try to offer him a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice to see if this helps. If the diarrhea persists, he starts vomiting , stops eating or becomes lethargic he will need to be examined by a veterinarian right away. Puppies can easily get intestinal parasites so it would be a good idea to have your veterinarian check a stool sample on Frank. My dog has blood/mucus in stool, gurgling stomach, no appetite. Why?

I'm sorry Max isn't well! He could be suffering from a foreign body, severe diarrhea from eating something rotten, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or intestinal worms causing the blood and mucus in his stool as well as the gurgling stomach and lack of appetite. When a dog has blood in the stool, it's time to see a vet to diagnose the cause of it because blood in the stool can be very serious. Home remedies are not recommended in these cases due to that, so I would take Max into a vet today. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My puppy has jelly-like poop but is acting fine. What could it be?

This could be from intestinal parasites or dietary related. I would bring a fecal sample in to a veterinarian and have them check for intestinal parasites so that the most appropriate treatment can be given. If the stool is negative for parasites then I would begin a bland diet of chicken and rice until the stool returns to normal and then transition back over a 7 day period to a different dog food such as science diet or royal canin. My puppy's poop has clear jelly. Is this normal? What should I do?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You are seeing some mucous on the stool. Mucous usually occurs when there is some inflammation in the colon. In a young dog, it could be parasites, something odd he ate, or it indicates a sensitivity to something like an allergen. If he is feeling well, eating normally, then I would not be too concerned. If he has not had a stool check done, I would definitely have it evaluated by your veterinarian. He may need to have his diet changed, but I would not just start buying different puppy foods.
