My puppy has jelly-like poop but is acting fine. What could it be?

My puppy has jelly like slime coming from her butt. She is eating, drinking and playing just fine

This could be from intestinal parasites or dietary related. I would bring a fecal sample in to a veterinarian and have them check for intestinal parasites so that the most appropriate treatment can be given. If the stool is negative for parasites then I would begin a bland diet of chicken and rice until the stool returns to normal and then transition back over a 7 day period to a different dog food such as science diet or royal canin. The white jelly, or mucus, can be indicative of inflammation in the colon. If Last is behaving normally otherwise, you can try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or an unflavored electrolyte replacement beverage. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal. Afterwards, transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve or if she develops other symptoms (lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite) then she should be examined by your veterinarian.

These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.
I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

It looks like mucous, which is normal in the colon. I would watch Zoe for a day or two. As long as she is eating and drinking and acting otherwise normal, then I would wait at home. If she becomes lethargic or stops eating and drinking, she needs to go to the vet as an urgent medical case.

In a young dog, it could be parasites, something odd he ate, or it indicates a sensitivity to something like an allergen. If he is feeling well, eating normally, then I would not be too concerned. If he has not had a stool check done, I would definitely have it evaluated by your veterinarian. He may need to have his diet changed, but I would not just start buying different puppy foods. My dog has dark, jelly-like poop. Is this diarrhea? What should I do?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, it looks like Snowy is having some diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, ranging from dietary indiscretion (he ate something he shouldn't have), diet change, gastrointestinal parasites (worms), or other organ system diseases like liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, etc. I recommend feeding Snowy a bland diet such as boiled (unseasoned) chicken or hamburger and rice, in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 3-4 days, to help firm up his stools. You can also try adding in a small amount of Metamucil (original, unflavored) powder to this food. Metamucil is an over-the-counter fiber supplement for people that we often use to help dogs with diarrhea. He would likely benefit from about 1/4 teaspoon of Metamucil in his food twice a day. If you are not noticing an improvement in his diarrhea after 2-3 days, I recommend bringing him (and a sample of his stool) to your veterinarian. At that time, a fecal analysis can be performed, and any other diagnostics as needed. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck with Snowy!

My puppy has jelly-like diarrhea and won't eat. Is it urgent?

Poor guy. It sounds like he has a bout of enteritis which can often be caused by intestinal parasites in pups. As long as he is acting normal, eating well, and not lethargic you are ok to take him in tomorrow. A short course of antibiotics +/- dewormer will likely be needed to help resolve his mucousy stool. This may be a repetition of a previous question (with pics this time). The pic on the right has jelly material in it which may symptomatic of a colitis (inflammation of the colon). Bland diet as previously suggested should be enough to resolve the problem.

Hi, If it is only diarrhea and otherwise Luna is active, no vomiting and eating, I would for now change the her food to a bland diet of boiled chicken breast and rice. It may be worth it to bring a few different samples of her faces so you can bring it with you to the vet appointment. But I suggest you wait with the antibiotics until you discuss it with the vet tomorrow.

You are right to be concerned. This is not normal and I'm also concerned about this bloody, mucusy poop. Since he's feeling fine you can wait until tomorrow but I would bring Max in for an exam and have them check a fecal sample in the morning. This can be from many reasons including parasites, a reaction to a drug, colitis, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or something causing bleeding in the intestinal tract. They will also want to check to make sure he is hydrated and not anemic and that his blood is clotting normally. Once they get a diagnosis they can then start the appropriate treatment. Why is my dog having jelly-like, clear, smelly diarrhea and shaking?

He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 12 hours then offer Jackson boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If the diarrhea carries on, take him to the vet to get treatment.
