How long after parvo can my puppy play with my other vaccinated puppy?

Thanks for using PetCoach. Depending on the severity of the couse of disease, it can take some puppies several weeks to fully recover. Be sure to feed the food her vet recommends and offer small amounts of food frequently. Do not allow her to eat all she wants at one time. Zoe may be contagious to other puppies for up to 3-4 weeks so should be kept away from other dogs and pups. Depending on how she is doing the vet may recommend vaccination anywhere from 1-3 weeks after she starts eating. She cannot contract Parvo again but does need to be vaccinated against other diseases. You cannot let them back together until they are fully vaccinated. One Parvo shot is not enough for protection, they need another in four weeks after the first until they are fully protected. Then they can be together, and out on the grass.

I am glad to hear that Esther is feeling better. Most of these puppies should eat a G.I. friendly diet and not regular puppy food for at least 10 days. Your veterinarian carries special prescription foods that are easy to digest and provide all the needed nutrients. As far as it goes with your other puppy, they should not be together until the other puppy is fully vaccinated. Vaccines do take about 7 to 10 days to take full effect. If you have questions about the efficacy of the vaccines, call your veterinarian. Vaccines given by the veterinarian tend to be more effective than vaccines given at home. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The first two doses of parvo vaccine were given correctly but the third one was given way too late. It would be safer to give Mocha another dose of parvo vaccine, about 3-4 weeks after the one she just had. That will make sure that she is fully protected and she is not any danger for the new puppy.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. To be on the safe side, I would wait until your puppy is fully vaccinated. Murph probably developed majority of the immunity already, put parvo is too dangerous disease to take the risk.

I would not recommend to get the puppy who did not get Parvo. It’s possible that he may still break with this highly contagious virus. For the puppy that survived Parvo, he will likely be fine. Long term, most dogs experience no organ damage or side effects. This puppy is still shedding the Parvo virus and will continue to shed the virus for 6 months in it’s feces. The virus will live for roughly 1 year in the soil. That means you cannot take this puppy out in public where it may expose other puppies who are not vaccinated for at least 6 months. That also means your yard will be contaminated for at least 1.5 years minimum so you cannot have any dogs over to play who are not fully vaccinated or else they run the risk of contracting the virus. You don’t want to harm any other pets. He also cannot play with any dogs who are not fully vaccinated for 6 months. The vaccine is highly effective and it’s unlikely that a fully vaccinated pet will get sick (but keep in mind nothing is a 100% guarantee). Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is a fine line between being too over protective and not socializing the puppy enough. I think walks on side walks and NON dog parks are fine. I think playing with healthy (not recently sick or currently sick) and 100% vaccinated animals is also fine. I do not recommend boarding, doggie daycare or dog parks until 2 weeks after the puppy's final vaccinations. So yes I think it absolutely fine for your friend to visit. Humans can carry viruses. If it has been 2 months since her previous dog died of parvo it is likely safe. She should leave her shoes outside and have clean clothes on. Have her wash her hands before playing with your puppy. If she recently, with in 2 months, had a parvo infected dog that is still alive in her house I would not have her visit. Good luck!
