My puppy had parvo. When is full recovery & vaccination safe?

I am glad to hear that Esther is feeling better. Most of these puppies should eat a G.I. friendly diet and not regular puppy food for at least 10 days. Your veterinarian carries special prescription foods that are easy to digest and provide all the needed nutrients. As far as it goes with your other puppy, they should not be together until the other puppy is fully vaccinated. Vaccines do take about 7 to 10 days to take full effect. If you have questions about the efficacy of the vaccines, call your veterinarian. Vaccines given by the veterinarian tend to be more effective than vaccines given at home. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Parvo-virus is a very resilient virus that lives in the environment for a long time. For this reason, keeping the puppies, and their environments, separate for at least 2 weeks after Roxy is completely healed is recommended, and then I would clean Roxy's environment aggressively with bleach water, and keep the puppies away from the 'infected' environment for a week while you are cleaning it. The other puppy SHOULD be OK because she is vaccinated, however until she has her third set I would keep them separate, because as the first vaccines are being given, and as the mother's immunity is wearing down, there will be times when the second puppy is at risk. You can and should start feeding Ivy gently by syringe, if she will not eat on her own, as soon as the vomiting has stopped. I would blenderize canned puppy food with water or purchase a canned recovery diet (like Hill's a/d) from your Vet. Parvo is tough, they usually get worse before they get better. It can take 5-7 days when they are hospitalized to get better. Parvo can be deadly, so if Ivy is non stop vomiting and is losing a lot of fluids she should be rechecked. Puppies die from parvo due to secondary dehydration and sepsis. I hope this helps and I wish Ivy a speedy recovery!

I would not recommend to get the puppy who did not get Parvo. It’s possible that he may still break with this highly contagious virus. For the puppy that survived Parvo, he will likely be fine. Long term, most dogs experience no organ damage or side effects. This puppy is still shedding the Parvo virus and will continue to shed the virus for 6 months in it’s feces. The virus will live for roughly 1 year in the soil. That means you cannot take this puppy out in public where it may expose other puppies who are not vaccinated for at least 6 months. That also means your yard will be contaminated for at least 1.5 years minimum so you cannot have any dogs over to play who are not fully vaccinated or else they run the risk of contracting the virus. You don’t want to harm any other pets. He also cannot play with any dogs who are not fully vaccinated for 6 months. The vaccine is highly effective and it’s unlikely that a fully vaccinated pet will get sick (but keep in mind nothing is a 100% guarantee). If Pixie is eating and drinking properly without vomitng and has no more diarrhea then you can worm her about a week after the last diarrhea. I would still wait a few weeks before vaccination as you want a fully recovered immune system in order to get a perfect immune response. So give it 2 weeks or so.

I'm glad your girl is feeling better. :) If she has recovered and is now eating and drinking normally, acting good, and no longer vomiting, then she should not need any special care from here on out - she can go back to normal life. There should be no concern with using the fan or air conditioner, bathing her, or letting her sleep on the floor. She can be vaccinated as normal now that she's no longer sick. And yes, it's fine for her to go outside and resume her normal daily walk routine.
