My dog had a parvo vaccine gap. Is she safe around a new puppy?

She will be protected and if she is kept away from other dogs, it's not likely she will bring anything back to the home that could infected the puppy. I hope this helps!

The risk is probably pretty low, but Lucy may not have full immunity for a couple of weeks after this last vaccine was administered. We booster this vaccine frequently to hopefully catch a dog during the window where antibody leftover from mom is declining and the puppy can make it's own immune response - this may have already happened, or she may be in the process of mounting this immune response now. If Lucy seems nauseous, if she is vomiting, or if her appetite is decreased I'd recommend seeing your vet right away.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Parvo-virus is a very resilient virus that lives in the environment for a long time. For this reason, keeping the puppies, and their environments, separate for at least 2 weeks after Roxy is completely healed is recommended, and then I would clean Roxy's environment aggressively with bleach water, and keep the puppies away from the 'infected' environment for a week while you are cleaning it. The other puppy SHOULD be OK because she is vaccinated, however until she has her third set I would keep them separate, because as the first vaccines are being given, and as the mother's immunity is wearing down, there will be times when the second puppy is at risk. Because they were spaced so far apart, I would say no, these vaccines are not enough to protect her from parvo. You will have to start the vaccine schedule over again, and I would count this vaccine given three days ago as the initial vaccine. Because she is older, she will only need one more vaccine given four weeks after this first one to be protected from parvo. Make sure to get her rabies vaccines as well, it's required by law in most states by the time the dog is four months of age. Best of luck.

Most adult dogs that were appropriately vaccinated against parvo as puppies - meaning 3 different vaccinations, given no earlier than 8 weeks of age and proceeding at 3 - 4 week intervals - are protected against contracting parvovirus, as long as they receive booster vaccinations as recommended. Typically, the recommendation is one vaccination on the one year anniversary of the last puppy vaccination, and then re-vaccination every 3 years after. Just one parvo vaccination is unlikely to be completely effective, but it may provide some protection, and if he contracts the disease it will likely be a milder form.

For his own safety and the safety of other dogs, it would be best to wait until he has received his complete first year round of vaccines including the second parvovirus vaccine which usually is given at around 4-5 months of age though that depends on when they received the first set of vaccines. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is evidence that once a dog has parvo they are protected for life. But I am hoping that your parents have vaccinated her since she was sick? The vaccine also gets distemper which is also contagious. If your parents have never vaccinated their dog I wouldn't bring Kona over there. Even if she is in the crate the virus is all over the house, where ever the dog went. If their dog is vaccinated then Kona should be fine there. I hope this helps!
