My 8-week puppy pees in crate at night. Should I remove bedding?

It will take time to fully train Tank. If he is only 2 months old he can really only hold his urine for about 3 hours. If he starts to whine in his crate at night I would recommend walking him when he starts to whine. When you take him outside I would recommend walking him on a leash. This is because puppies are easily distracted. Once he urinates +/- defecates he can have off leash time in the backyard. With crate training remember anytime you cannot have your eyes on him 100% of the time he should be in the crate. Also if you take Tank outside and he doesn't go to the bathroom I always recommend putting Tank back in the crate for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes take Tank back outside to try again. It takes time and patience to train a puppy, but if you are consistent it will pay off. This is a very common problem with puppies :) It sounds like the pen he is in is probably too large - it gives him too much space to work with, and makes it easy for him to wake up and find a spot to pee, rather than either holding it or whining to let you know he needs to go out. Instead of the pen, I would recommend having him sleep in a crate in your bedroom at night. Most puppies instinctively do not want to pee where they are sleeping, so in most cases this means that the pup will whine to wake you up if he needs to go out during the night. As he gets older and his bladder control improves, he should start to be able to hold it all night with no problems.

Hello. Crate training takes time, so keep persevering. That being said, expect dogs to be able to hold their bladders the number of months they are in terms of hours, as a general rule. They can hold it a little longer at night. Expect to have to wake up in the middle of the night to let him outside. Bring him outside, let him pee, then right back inside into the crate. No playing or else he will get used to that. The whining and barking should subside soon. HAve fun with him!

They are adorable! At four months of age, 10 hours is too long for Coco and Chaz to stay in their crate. Their bladder isn't big enough to hold their urine that long, and they should be let out to potty every three to four hours. I would consider hiring someone to stop by at least once or twice a day to let them out to potty if you can't leave work to let them out. Dogs should be in crates no longer than eight hours, even if they are older. I hope this helps!

Have Bourbon examined by your vet to rule out medical causes such as UTI or congenital defects affecting his urinary tract. At his age, expect to Bourbon to still have "accidents". Reinforce crate training or choose one method of training and stick with it. If you choose the crate, it should only be big enough for Bourbon to stand, turn around and lay down. He can be crated for a maximum of 3 hours (age in months + 1 hour) before needing to go out. This includes overnights. Put him on a consistent schedule for going outside. He goes outside FIRST thing in the morning. Pick a spot outside and wait. No walks until he goes. Praise and reward him when he goes. Place him back in the crate or on a leash attached to your hip so you can watch for his cues to go. This may be circling, whining or sniffing around. Do not leave Bourbon unsupervised until he is house trained. He will need to go about 30 minutes after eating or playing. Take up the water 2 hours before bedtime and take her out right before bedtime. Be patient. Be consistent.

Hi there. It's often easier for puppies to "hold it" during the night when they would normally be sleeping, vs. during the day when they're more likely to be awake - so this could be the reason she's having accidents. It's also possible that she has separation anxiety, which often causes dogs to have potty accidents while the owner is away. I would recommend having a neighbor or dog sitter come by once or twice during the day to take her out for potty breaks as a first step. If this resolves the problem, then it's likely that she just can't hold her bladder for that long during the day just yet. If the accidents continue, then I would be very concerned that she may be anxious and upset when you're gone. In that case, I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about anti-anxiety medication and a training plan to address her anxiety.

You've listed Grizzly as 2 months old, and this is still WAY too young to be holding it that young. Puppies do not have developed bladders that can hold their urine that long until they are about 8-9 months of age. The rule of thumb is one hour for every month old your pup is so Grizzly should be going out at a minimum of every two hours. Puppies generally also need to go potty about 15 minutes after waking up, playing, eating, or drinking, so you can use that to start timing his outings and make it a success. Since he is very young, he will also likely need to go out to go potty 1-2 times in the night, even if crate training. I do not recommend withholding water at all as this can lead to health issues.
