Why is my puppy peeing or pooping on the treadmill while exercising?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Roxy. It is always difficult to tell if puppies are having true urinary issues verses potty training problems. If she continues this behavior, she will need to see a veterinarian to see if she has a urinary tract infection. It is a more likely condition in a female pup given their anatomy. In the meantime, watch for blood in her urine and continue to take her out frequently. I hope this information helps!

HI Adeel! Roxy is so super cute! You can start doing some training on a treadmill now, but you will have to get her used to it. I would put a link below on a website on how to do it. The amount of time she is allowed to exercise is five minutes for every month of age, so at three months she should exercise no more than 15 minutes twice a day. However, this could be pain or discomfort while urinating/defecating. If this continues, it would be best to have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Exercise stimulates the need to poop, so if Tanner is doing this on a run, that could be why he keeps stopping to poop. I had a golden retriever who used to do the same thing. She would poop at the beginning of our run, then keep stopping to poop even though nothing was coming out. To stop that, I wouldn't take her out to exercise unless she had an empty stomach. I would walk her around in the backyard first to get her to poop, gave her a few minutes, then started the run. With her, I found it helped to have that warm up to poop, and then once the run started, she was able to go without stopping. I would try that with Tanner to see if it helps.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! California is only 9 weeks old and house training isn't close to being accomplished yet. I wouldn't house train California to go in the house at all. Some dogs do n ot care if they eliminate in their bedding or not. I would ramp up house training: take her out as often as you can and when she goes outside verbally praise her, give her a yummy treat and play with her outside, teach her how to rings bell to go outside, block all rooms she can go in to to soil, clean all soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle, crate her when you are not home and at night, wake up 1-2 times over night to take her out, have someone come while you are at work to take her out and when you are home she should be leashed to an adult at all times. If she doesn't go when you take her out she should be put in her crate and you should try again 20 mins later. You should do this for 2-3 months with out an accident before you become less strict an allow her access to all rooms in your house unobserved. California is very young and to be 100% house broken at 9 weeks of age isn't normal for any puppy. I hope this helps and I wish you and California the best!
