How to teach a housebroken adult dog to use pee pads indoors?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It will take time to teach an older dog to go indoors. I would take the pad outside and put it on the ground. See if he will use it outside. If he poops and pees on it, bring it indoors and leave it there soiled for a little bit. So he can see it and smell the elimination. Use praise and treats when he uses the pad outdoors and then when he uses it indoors. Start with the pads close to the door to the outside and then gradually move it to your desired location. Use whatever phrase you use to encourage him to go "do your business," etc. Use a leash to let him sniff the pad. It will take tome to retrain him. Dogs like their routines. Be patient and positive! You would want to train Clarice to it just like you would regular potty training. Dogs are very substrate-specific, and at her age she likely is used to going on actual dirt or grass. You may want to add some dirt to where you are trying to teach her to go, and take her every hour or so to keep giving her chances to sniff and try it out. If she does go, rewarding with her praise and treats can help.

You are right in that crate training is usually used for teaching a dog how to hold it better when potty training. If you're looking to get Siao-lyn used to an indoor potty area, I would simply take her to the area as you would take her outside, so that she learns to go there. However, there may be some confusion over this if you are taking her both outside to potty, and inside. Instead, it would be better to try and take her outside more often so she doesn't need to hold it so long inside. Once she is older, she will be bale to hold it longer over time, and wouldn't need the indoor potty unless you plan to have her go there exclusively, anyway.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The easiest way is by using the pads and the training spray which makes them identify where they should urinate. I usually recommend that at the beginning you start by adding pads in just one place in the house so that they get used to urinating in only one spot. This usually works very well. Positive reinforcement is of course also important so giving her treats when she does go in the pad is very important so that she associates going in the pad with something positive. Good luck!

When she goes in the pad, move the BM outside and show her where you put it and have sniff thebarea to associate the two things. You can also start moving the pad closer to the door each day and eventually move the pad outside completely until she gets used to going outdoors for that

What a frustrating issue. If they are already having accidents in the house on rainy days, I think putting down the pee pad occasionally won't make things worse. You'll need to put a bit of effort in to teaching them to use the pads - pay close attention to them when it's storming and lead them to the pad (probably on a leash or would be best) and reward them immediately with treats after they pee there. Additionally, clean any areas they have peed in the house with an enzymatic cleaner. I like Urine Away. This will help remove the smell so they are less likely to urinate there again.
