Can my puppy get parvo from dirt before full vaccinations?

Yes, parvo lives in the environment for a very long time. The is not the most common way puppies contract it but is a possibility through people and animals spreading the virus. If there is an area that is contaminated, and the sheltie walks through it, it is then on the shelties feet. If you puppy licks or contact something contaminated, then he will be at risk. The best thing to do is keep the sheltie to a limited area in your yard to minimize his risk of touching it, then wiping his feet when he comes in.

It is impossible to know for sure if you have parvo in your yard. If you know for certain that your yard has never had another dog in it, Taz is likely fine to be in the yard. However, if you don't know for sure, I would limit the amount of exploring Taz does in the backyard to play it safe until 1 week after his final vaccination. From there if you touch it or step in the affected areas it can travel anywhere on your clothes or shoes. If you changed the carpet and disinfected all the surfaces, then It should not be in the new carpet. Vaccines can be started at 6 weeks but if he has had no shots then start him right away and get it boostered every 2-3 weeks for protection

If your dog has been fully vaccinated against parvo (completed a full puppy series of vaccines) then infection is very unlikely. If it has been years since the kennel had a parvo infected dog inside, it is unlikely the virus is still alive. I wouldn't take Koda into the backyard just yet because parvo can live in then environment for months. If her shots aren't complete, she still runs the risk of catching it from the environment. I'd take her in the front yard if your previous puppy hadn't gone there, but wait until she is fully vaccinated before taking her into the backyard. Best of luck!

It sounds like you've done a good job disinfecting your home - if the new pup is finished with her vaccinations, the risk should be minimal. To be safe, you could certainly try and keep her in the areas of your home where your previous puppy never spent time or used the bathroom. But from what you've said here, it seems unlikely that Kiki would get sick - the parvo vaccine is usually very effective, so most cases that I see are in unvaccinated pups.

However, the likelihood of Luna developing parvovirus just from being walked in a heavily trafficked area is low unless she directly had contact with feces from an infected dog. I would not be too concerned at this time. Just work with your primary care veterinarian in starting her on a vaccination protocol and avoid contact with other dogs with an unknown vaccination status until she is fully vaccinated. I will tell you what to look for in terms of parvovirus symptoms though again it is unlikely that she has parvovirus. Symptoms usually include lethargy, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Contact your veterinarian to get her set up to start a vaccination program soon. I think she will be fine. Nothing like getting a new pup! I bet she is adorable! Good luck!
