My 8-month-old puppy has a painless lump on her head. Should I worry?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 1 day old

I have a 8 month old Jack Russell puppy. She has a lump under her skin like at the ridge of the back of her skull. It doesn't cause her pain to touch and she seems fine. It won't be injections as had none recently. Will it be a fatty tissue? Should I be worried?

If I’m understanding the location correctly, it could be normal. Some dogs have a pronounced occipital crest. Something like this though requires actually touching it and looking at it to know for sure so you should have her seen. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
