Is it safe to take a puppy outside in a carrier before all shots?

Magdalene is adorable! Thanks for posting a picture. I think the answer to your question really depends on where you will be taking her. She will not be fully protected until 2 weeks after her last vaccination, so you will certainly want to avoid any areas that other puppies may have been to avoid exposing her to Distemper, Parvo or respiratory viruses. Since Leptospirosis is also a concern in HI, you will want to avoid water or areas that flood. I prefer she not be around other dogs until she’s 14 weeks old and has finished her vaccinations. You certainly can take her out and about as long as you minimize her contact with other dogs. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Mia.

Mighty is a cutie pie! And I love his name! Yes, you can take him in his carrier. I would just be aware that he isn't completely protected from the important virus until he has had all of his shots (usually 4 sets of shots each 3 weeks apart with the last set around 15-17 weeks old). If you do take him, I would just be aware of where you allow him to go to the bathroom and do not take him into any public places where other dogs could have been like petsmart and Petco or any public parks. If you don't want to risk it, then I would keep her in her crate or leave her at home. Also, do not leave her in the car without any AC going as the temperatures can get hot really quick during these warmer months. I hope this helps !

Unfortunately, Maximus is not fully vaccinated at this point, so he should not be going outside. Depending on your state, he can be fully vaccinated by 12 or 16 weeks. If this was his first round of shots, he will need a booster in 2-4 weeks and then his Rabies vaccine at 12-16 weeks as well as his last booster. Maximus should have minimal contact with other dogs (even where other dogs have gone to the bathroom) as you can’t be sure they are not carrying any of the viruses that Maximus is not vaccinated for that can make him very sick. I know it is difficult to keep a large active puppy inside, but your vet can work with you to have Maximus fully vaccinated in a reasonable amount of time.

I would not recommend taking your puppy with you. Even if you carry her the whole time people will still approach you and want to pet her/come into contact with her. I think this is a high risk of exposure to illness. She is not fully vaccinated so taking her will be a risk. I hope that helps

It depends on your area. I do recommend outside training with dogs that were vaccinated once. Although, still caution people because the puppies are not fully vaccinated. Make sure he does not come into contact with other dogs unless you know the people and their dogs are healthy and up to date on vaccinations. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can take her outside. There is a fine line between socializing and preventing her from contracting a contagious disease. Walks outside are fine. No dog parks, no playing with dogs that are not vaccinated, etc. She is old enough for Nexgard, Revolution and Frontline for fleas and ticks. I hope this helps!
