Why doesn't my puppy sniff her pee after peeing during pad training?

At 8 weeks, your puppy is not potty trained and is likely very confused. At this age they can't hold their potty very long (no more than 1-2 hours) and will usually have to go after playing, eating, drinking, waking up, etc. You can use this to your advantage to start timing going over to the potty pad and waiting until she goes. Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is not an uncommom issue. I recommend that you try the training pad spray that you put on the pad. This would help your pup identify the right place to do her business. You can get this at your local pet store. Given that she learned how to let you guys know when she wants to go outside, she is for sure very smart so I'm sure she will learn this as well. Try to keep the blankets off the flour at least for now while she learns. Remember to praise and reward her when you notice the desired behavior. Good luck!

Sadie is precious. First remember that she is still VERY young. At only 2 months old, there is still several weeks that she needs to learn. I usually expect puppies to sometimes take until they are 5-6 months old to be completely potty trained. If you aren't already, I would crate train her as this seems to be the quickest method. I will leave a link below with more details. If you are already doing this, you could try the potty pads to see if this helps and slowly move the pads closer and closer to the door. But most importantly be patient with her. If you want her to go potty outside only, I would remove the potty pads as this is likely just confusing her. Giving her the option of both may confuse her as to where the appropriate place to go potty is. Instead, taking her out every 1-2 hours, and establishing a routine of going out after eating, drinking, playing, waking up, etc, can help get her used to the fact that outside = go potty time, along with your treats and rewards. If she has an accident inside, moving her outside to let her finish is best, as well as using an enzymatic cleaner to remove any residue and discourage going potty there again. I would recommend against puppy training pads. Sometimes when you train them on puppy training pads as they age then still urinate in the house on paper when you want them to go outside. If you plan on taking Raven outside to go to the bathroom I would recommend starting to do it now. Raven is so very young that he will not be trained for a few months. Don't stress, it will happen. I would recommend crate training: Many people state that crate training is cruel but a crate is a safe haven for your puppy and many dogs use it as a place to rest and recovery after a long day. This method is extremely effective when house training and helps when you cannot watch Raven. You must choose a crate that Raven can stand up, sit down and turn around. Getting a crate bigger then this can lead Raven to urinate or defecate on one side of the crate while sleeping on the other side. A crate should only create a positive environment. Never use the crate for punishment. Despite what many people think do not line the crate with blankets or beds. The reason is Raven can urinate on the blankets and beds which can soak up the urine and he can bury the stool. Keeping Raven in the crate when you cannot keep 100% eye on him is important. Every time you take him out of the crate take him on a walk to make sure they go to the bathroom and give positive reinforcement if he does. If they do not eliminate while you are outside or on the puppy pad then put Raven back in the crate for another 20minutes. After 20 minutes take him out once again to try. If Raven does go to the bathroom make sure you take time to play with him and when you have to turn your back again put them back in the crate. If you catch him having an accident in the house tell Raven no and then take him outside or to the puppy pad and praise him if he goes. Snowball certainly sounds bored and like she has plenty of energy to burn! She is clearly trying to play by pulling her pad out and running off with it. I suggest getting rid of the pads entirely and making sure she is house-trained completely. Keeping a specific schedule for her feeding and walks really helps with this, and reward her when she goes outside. She is old enough now at 7 months that she shouldn't be having any accidents in the house or in her crate if you are taking her for walks frequently enough.
