My 8-week-old puppy won't use potty pads. What methods can I try?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I honestly would recommend using Fresh Patch. I've had so many clients have success stories with potty training their puppy because of this product. It is basically a patch of grass that you order online that comes in a cardboard box that auto-ships to you to replace the used one. I would look into this and try it out to see if it helps more than the puppy pad. I hope this helps! Puppies will typically need to use the bathroom about 10-15 minutes after eating/drinking, waking up or playing. You can use these times to reinforce [training](https://www.petcoach.co/article/housetraining) by bringing the puppy to your designated potty area (such as outside or a puppy pad) and giving them a chance to go. Be sure to praise and treat if the puppy goes in the right spot. If you catch puppy going in a spot other than the recommended area, do not punish him or her, simply pick the puppy up and move them to the right spot, then praise and reward profusely once they finish there.

If you want her to go potty outside only, I would remove the potty pads as this is likely just confusing her. Giving her the option of both may confuse her as to where the appropriate place to go potty is. Instead, taking her out every 1-2 hours, and establishing a routine of going out after eating, drinking, playing, waking up, etc, can help get her used to the fact that outside = go potty time, along with your treats and rewards. If she has an accident inside, moving her outside to let her finish is best, as well as using an enzymatic cleaner to remove any residue and discourage going potty there again. 2 months is extremely young, and Harley likely doesn't know what you expect from her. As for not sniffing, that is pretty normal for this age. Training to go on a puppy potty pad uses the same techniques as regular potty training, so it is best to work on a regular potty schedule like you would if you were taking her outside. Crate training can also help, however a 2 month old puppy likely can't hold it more than 1-2 hours at most. Hi there. At 8 weeks old, Mimi is still a tiny baby - puppies have very little bowel or bladder control at this age, so it's normal for her to urinate and defecate frequently at random times throughout the day. You need to take her out every 20-30 minutes at this age, so give her plenty of opportunities to do her business outside. Praise and reward her with a treat each time she goes. Inside, supervise her constantly and take her out immediately if you see any signs that she's thinking about using the bathroom - circling, sniffing the floor intently, etc. Don't scold or punish her for having an accident in the house, as this will only make her afraid to go to the bathroom in front of you - which then makes potty training much harder! 50 days old is still extremely young and Hachiko probably isn't old enough to hold his potty very long yet. He will likely need to go out at least every 1-2 hours, and about 10-15 minutes after eating, drinking, playing, and waking up. You can use this to your advantage to start taking him outside to go potty before he has an accident so he learns to go outside. If you want him to go in a certain area, then use these times to take him to that spot so he learns to go there. The key to potty training is to offer Gracie lots of chances to go where you want her to go. She'll need to be supervised while in the house until she gets the hang of things. This means someone needs to be actively watching her, not just in the room with her. After she eats, after she plays, and after she sleeps, take her over to the pee pads and give her whatever command you'd like to use for toileting. If she's close to the edge, pick her up and place her in the middle, or put a few training pads together to make a bigger area. Once she does go, praise her lavishly, and give her a treat. If you catch her peeing or pooing where she's not supposed to, then simply make a loud noise to stop her, pick her up and put her on the pee pads and give her the command. If you catch her after she's already gone elsewhere there's no point in punishing her as she won't associate what she's done with the punishment. Remember she's just a baby and she's still learning, so be consistent and offer her lots of opportunities. Good luck!
