My puppy doesn't poop immediately after eating. Is that normal?

Most dogs only have one bowel movement per day and some only have a bowel movement every other day. As long as a dog is eating, drinking and acting normally, and seems to be having a normal bowel movement without straining, I don’t worry. As puppies grow, their guts mature. Additionally, different diets have different fiber content. Both of these changes can change the frequency of bowel movements. It sounds as though Harley’s bowel movement frequency is completely normal!

I wouldn't be too concerned about not passing stool unless Bowie goes more than 24 hours without going, or seems in distress/ill (trying to go but can't, vomiting, not eating or drinking, lethargic, etc.) A play session and some running around may help encourage his bowels to get moving as well!

Dogs are much like people in this regard. Anywhere from 3 times a day to every other day can be normal. If Ozzy is happy, eating, playing, and urinating normally, don’t worry about it. As long as he poops within 24-36 hours I’m not panicking. Do watch for straining, blood, or any other concerning signs. If you see any of these, it’s time to see the vet.

Congratulations on your new puppy! If Bella is acting completely normal otherwise and defecated a large amount yesterday, I wouldn't be too concerned. It is common for puppies to take some time to regulate their bathroom habits after changing homes and/or changing foods. If you do notice signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, poor appetite), then I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam.

Thanks for your question. The fact that Hachi had diarrhea this morning explains why he did not have another bowel movement in the evening. It is very normal to not have a bowel movement for a day or so after an episode of diarrhea. The colon becomes empty. If he is now acting normal and hasn't passed more diarrhea, then I would not be concerned. I hope this answers your question.

Just like with any biological system that is so complex, elimination habits are going to be variable depending on many factors such as composition of the food ingested, digestion, absorption of nutrients, and the transit time of the material in the intestines. As long as everything else is normal, it's completely within normal limits for times of elimination to vary. Just think about yourself and your patterns and understand that with very complex physiological systems, variability will always be present and probably normal. I don't think you need to worry. It can be normal for a dog to poop every 1-2 days, not necessarily daily. If his stools are formed, that is normal. If they are occasionally a little soft, that can be normal. If they are soft serve texture or softer than that over 50% of the time, I would recommend that you talk to your vet about it. Overall it sounds like Nori is ok! The carrots and zucchini are a fine addition to his balanced dog food, and its ok that he doesn't like pumpkin. I hope that information helps you!
