Puppy not eating/drinking. He's on Pedialyte, can I give food?

Hello. If Belle feels like drinking, then yes, she can have Pedialyte to drink. You can also try to get her to eat using some cooked chicken or hamburger, or even jars of baby food ( with no onions or garlic in the ingredients ). If she still refuses to eat or drink, I do hope you can have her examined by your veterinarian. She may have some infection or inflammation that is making her feel ill. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours. You may try offering a small amount (1/8 of a cup) several times daily. Vomiting can be rapidly dehydrating in young small puppies, so it can be hard to correct dehydration alone with oral liquids. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Angel. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. Her symptoms are worrisome. Puppies should be very playful. She will become dehydrated from not eating and drinking properly. This can occur even with some Pedialyte. She will be examined and a detailed history taken to try to determine the cause of her symptoms. Testing may be recommended depending on these findings. Once a diagnosis can be reached, treatment will be started. I hope this information helps!

She might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this, maybe she is suffering from a gastrointestinal infection as a result. withhold food for 12 hours then offer Spirit boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food. If she continues vomiting or is not eating after the 12 hours withholding food, take her to the vet to get treatment.

Yes, pedialyte is safe for use in dogs. Common causes of diarrhea in dogs include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, autoimmune disease, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. You can withhold food for 12-24 hours, and then start her back on small amounts of her normal food, or you can give her boiled chicken breast, cooked white rice, or cooked eggs. However, if the diarrhea continues for another 24 hours, or if Jade start vomiting or does not seem interested in eating, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian. The vet may recommend diagnostics like an internal parasite screen or bloodwork to try to figure out what is going on.

You can offer the pedialyte in a bowl several times a day. If he is refusing to drink from the bowl then you can syringe 10-20mls every 2 hours or so into his mouth. Be sure to do it slowly so there is no risk of aspiration. You can offer him water at the same time as well.
