My dog is vomiting, has diarrhea, and won't eat. Is Pedialyte safe?

Yes, pedialyte is safe for use in dogs. Common causes of diarrhea in dogs include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, autoimmune disease, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. You can withhold food for 12-24 hours, and then start her back on small amounts of her normal food, or you can give her boiled chicken breast, cooked white rice, or cooked eggs. However, if the diarrhea continues for another 24 hours, or if Jade start vomiting or does not seem interested in eating, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian. The vet may recommend diagnostics like an internal parasite screen or bloodwork to try to figure out what is going on.

Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If there is no vomiting in 6 hours offer small amounts of water frequently. If that goes well (no vomiting) then start feeding at 12-24 hours with a bland diet. use boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, foreign body blockage, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion or metabolic changes. If Mila is drinking, offer unflavored PediaLyte or similar sugar free electrolyte solution. A bland diet should be fed as well. This can be plain white rice mixed 1:1 with one of the following: boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast, ground turkey, ground beef (cooked/drained) or cottage cheese. You can serve it warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate her appetite. Feed until the stool is normal before slowly transitioning to a quality puppy food.

Hello. If Belle feels like drinking, then yes, she can have Pedialyte to drink. You can also try to get her to eat using some cooked chicken or hamburger, or even jars of baby food ( with no onions or garlic in the ingredients ). If she still refuses to eat or drink, I do hope you can have her examined by your veterinarian. She may have some infection or inflammation that is making her feel ill. I don’t recommend to give any flavored Pedialyte as it can cause further stomach upset and some of them may contain a toxic sweetener called xylitol. When pets have diarrhea beyond two days, they need to be examined by the veterinarian as shifts in the bacterial flora tend to occur and will continue the diarrhea regardless of the initial cause. Continuing diarrhea can be a sign of many different disease conditions. Bring in a sample of stool for testing. I hope this helps.

If you have recently switched his food or added in a new treat it could be dietary indiscretion causing this. If this were the case, I would withhold food for 12 hours and introduce a bland diet as outlined below. If, however, there has been no recent switch to his food and he has been on the same thing his whole life this is likely something else. My recommendation would be to have a veterinarian take a look at him and run some testing such as blood work to see if there are any concerning changes that need to be addressed. If you are concerned about money, then you can start the bland diet as outlined below but if the vomiting and lethargy persist for more than 24 hours I would strongly recommend he be seen by a vet. CareCredit is a good option to look into. This option will allow you to put Veterinary expenses on a line of credit specifically for that purpose and you will pay Care Credit on a monthly basis. I would call and check to see if the vet clinic accepts Care Credit First. Bland diets are fed to rest the gastric system and to help promote normal stool formation. Animals that are physically sick should not be fed bland diets as a method of treatment. PRIOR TO FEEDING A BLAND DIET Pets should be fasted for 12 to 24 hours. Young animals should not be fasted for more than 12 hours. Fasting will allow the intestinal system to relax and minimize acid secretions that may irritate and inflame the intestinal lining. During the fast small amounts of water or ice chips may be provided. Never fast a sick animal, it may cause disease progression and death.
