My dog is vomiting, has diarrhea, and won't eat. Is Pedialyte safe?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 10 months and 28 days old | 9 lbs

I have a 9lb half Chihuahua/jack Russell terrier female who has been vomiting and having diarrhea all day today. She hasn't eaten anything but she's drank a little water. I made her some steam rice to eat no salt, no butter, no fat just boiled in water so that she can eat something she has not touched it. I'm afraid she'll get dehydrated, I was thinking of buying her some pedialyte but not sure if not sure she can have it she is only 9 months. I'm not sure was is causing her illness. Any advice

She might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this, maybe she is suffering from a gastrointestinal infection as a result. withhold food for 12 hours then offer Spirit boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food.

If she continues vomiting or is not eating after the 12 hours withholding food, take her to the vet to get treatment.
