Is my puppy's loose tooth with purple gums causing diarrhea?

It’s a little difficult to see where the baby tooth and where the adult tooth are in your picture, but I would be concerned that the gum tissue does look quite purple and swollen. Ivy is quite old to still have a baby tooth - it should have fallen out by 6 months - and it’s possible that the adult tooth has a problem from the baby tooth being in for too long. There’s no substitute for an in person exam and in this case I think you should have your vet take a look.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The purple tooth did not happen from damage yesterday but it does need to be addressed. A purple tooth means the root is dead and that can lead to an infection. I would take Rufus to a vet (not an emergency) and discuss removal of the tooth. It isn’t a tooth he needs to eat or chew and he will be happier to have the bad tooth removed. Good luck and kisses to Rufus!

Just because you don't see worms doesn't mean they aren't there. In fact, hookworms are the worms that cause anemia (and subsequently white gums) and they are so tiny you cannot see them with the naked eye. There are other intestinal parasite, like coccidia, that are microscopic as well. I would recommend bringing a fecal sample to your vet to have it analyzed so you can make sure you are treating all the parasites the puppy may have. Also, keep in mind, most puppies need multiple dewormings to get all of the parasites. Giving her moist food is fine, it will also help hydrate her since she isn't drinking great. I recommend that you have Luna evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to look at this closely and decide what would be best. Bloody diarrhea could be caused by toxin ingestion, parasites, change in diet,, infectious viral diseases such as parvovirus, blockage in the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. In a newly re-homed pup like Kane, stress could also be a factor. Please have Kane seen by a veterinarian right away, as bloody diarrhea can lead to dehydration and anemia, and can be very dangerous and even deadly if left untreated. White gums are especially concerning, as they can indicate severe anemia. I recommend you take Kane in to the vet immediately, and take in a fecal sample from Kane when you go. Your vet will likely want to test the sample to see if Kane is infected with parvovirus or parasites so that he can be treated for accordingly. Best of luck. I hope he feels better soon!

The canine tooth looks like it might have a little evidence of gingivitis but it can be difficult to tell from a picture. I also would not prescribe antibiotics for dental disease in most situations - if the tooth is infected removing it is the best treatment option. Even though the tooth probably will fall out there may be other diseased teeth since it can be difficult to evaluate the extent of disease without sedation - you may want to ask your vet about a dental cleaning or if your vet does not do this procedure see another vet.

Poor Minnie. The black tooth is likely infected and the red gums indicate periodontal disease. She needs to go to your vet for a mouth exam and likely will need to have this area cleaned well and potentially have to have the tooth extracted. The vet may recommend dental x-rays for optimal care. Until you can get her in you can rinse her mouth with pet formulated mouth wash to help with the odor and cut down in the infection.
