My dog chewed a zipper, now his front tooth is purple. Vet needed?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Frankenstein. The majority of the time when a tooth becomes discolored, it is has sustained some sort of trauma. This can be from chewing on a hard toy, rock, bone or even a crate. The discoloration typically means that the tooth is dying. It likely will not resolve on its own. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. He will likely need to go under anesthesia to have dental x-rays taken to assess the tooth. This can guide treatment options. It is good that he is still eating and drinking normally. He could still be experiencing some pain from the tooth though. I hope this information helps!

It’s a little difficult to see where the baby tooth and where the adult tooth are in your picture, but I would be concerned that the gum tissue does look quite purple and swollen. Ivy is quite old to still have a baby tooth - it should have fallen out by 6 months - and it’s possible that the adult tooth has a problem from the baby tooth being in for too long. There’s no substitute for an in person exam and in this case I think you should have your vet take a look.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pharah. Yes, she will need to see her veterinarian. With the tooth broken in that manner, the root canal sounds exposed. This will be very painful for her. It will also allow an infection to develop within that tooth. She may need to have the tooth extracted. Most dogs do not shows signs of oral pain, so it may be difficult to tell based on her behavior at home. I suspect it is very painful though. I hope this information helps!

This may or may not have compromised the health of the tooth. I would recommend a dental cleaning to remove any tartar and also to get x-rays done of that particular tooth to see if there is any evidence the tooth is broken below the gingiva or if there is disease of the pulp chamber of the tooth. Having a lesion in the mouth with such inflamed gums and possibly a broken off tooth root is very painful and prone to damage the permanent tooth that will come up and also can cause serious general infection. You will need to have this examined by your vet who will need to remove the tooth. If thee tooth is "just hanging by a thread" the vet may be able to just lift it out without too much pain or he may have to sedate your dog to remove it and check for any root remnants. It is possible that the pain and insufficient processing of the food due to pain can cause diarrhea. Until you get to take her to the vet you can feed her some wet /canned food and make it soupy so she does not have to use her teeth.

I recommend making an appointment with your vet when they open to take a look at it. Though she isn’t acting painful, it may become painful or infected. There isn’t anything you can do at home and no safe medications you can give for pain. If it is broken, she will likely need to undergo anesthesia to have the tooth removed.
