My puppy has white gums and diarrhea. Is it an an emergency?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 lbs

I found this puppy a few days ago with white gums. I have dewormed her but she has watery diarrhea and no signs of worms in her poop. I am giving her moist food because she won't eat dry food. And water and also replacement milk so she doesn't dehydrate. What should i do?

Just because you don't see worms doesn't mean they aren't there. In fact, hookworms are the worms that cause anemia (and subsequently white gums) and they are so tiny you cannot see them with the naked eye. There are other intestinal parasite, like coccidia, that are microscopic as well. I would recommend bringing a fecal sample to your vet to have it analyzed so you can make sure you are treating all the parasites the puppy may have. Also, keep in mind, most puppies need multiple dewormings to get all of the parasites. Giving her moist food is fine, it will also help hydrate her since she isn't drinking great. With gums that pale a life threatening anemia is very possible. This could happen due to severe fleas, an infection or even a bone marrow problem. I recommend she be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible as anemia can be fatal in puppies. In the meantime keep Redd warm but not hot, continue to offer fresh water and food and monitor her closely for signs of breathing difficulties and abdominal pain.

Hi there. This is an absolute emergency. Reds needs to be seen by a vet right away. White gums mean anemia (low blood) and he can potentially die from this very soon if not addressed. He may very well need a blood transfusion and diagnostics to see what is causing his blood loss.

This is very serious. White gums point to anemia, there are various reasons for anemia in a small puppy, the most likely being a hookworm or other worm infection. Your puppy needs to see a vet tonight, especially if he is lethargic and/or dehydrated from the diarrhea. Please take him to an out of hours vet or Pet ER

My new puppy has white gums and worms. Is deworming safe if anemic?

Those worms are tape worm proglottids. You would have to worm this puppy with a wormer like Drontal plus,however at 7 weeks it is very young to worm with praziquantel (the ingredient in Drontal plus that works against tape worm). The anemia is also likely from the flea infestation. I suggest you take your puppy to your vet for the worming and bring the photos wth the worms/proglottids with you to the vet. The vet will have to assess your puppy to verify that it can be wormed against tape worm. There are some other wormers that can be used, however. it is important to examine the puppy first since it is anemic.

Why does my puppy have white gums, bloody stool, and won't eat?

Bloody diarrhea could be caused by toxin ingestion, parasites, change in diet,, infectious viral diseases such as parvovirus, blockage in the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. In a newly re-homed pup like Kane, stress could also be a factor. Please have Kane seen by a veterinarian right away, as bloody diarrhea can lead to dehydration and anemia, and can be very dangerous and even deadly if left untreated. White gums are especially concerning, as they can indicate severe anemia. I recommend you take Kane in to the vet immediately, and take in a fecal sample from Kane when you go. Your vet will likely want to test the sample to see if Kane is infected with parvovirus or parasites so that he can be treated for accordingly. Best of luck. I hope he feels better soon!

What color are healthy puppy gums? What if my puppy has worms?

Healthy puppies have light pink, moist gums. If they are anemic from intestinal parasites the gums will be a paler pink or more whitish. You can press on the gums with your finger and a normal gum will turn white for a second then pink right up again. If the pressed area stays white longer they may be dehydrated also. Fleas can also cause anemia and pale gums. If there is any question about them being healthy please take them in for an exam. My 10-week puppy has white gums, diarrhea, heavy breathing. Is it parvo?

I'm really sorry to see this. In a 10-week old, I am very concerned about parvovirus as a cause of the signs you are seeing. The pale gums and fast breathing indicates to me that this little pup is going into shock or may be anemic from losing blood in the diarrhea. This is an emergency and she needs to go to the vet immediately to prevent life-threatening complications. In the meantime, try to keep her warm and encourage her to drink some water if she is able. My dog has diarrhea and pale gums. Could diarrhea cause anemia?

Unless there is massive blood loss in the diarrhea, resulting in the presence of frank blood or digested blood (the stool looks black in these cases), diarrhea cannot cause anemia. I'm glad to hear that Jack is still acting normally despite his diarrhea and slightly lighter pink gums. Gum color can change for a wide variety of reasons, including those associated with blood loss and low blood pressure. A bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice sounds like a great idea for Jack. If his diarrhea continues or worsens, or if he becomes lethargic, vomits, refuses to eat or drink, or has any breathing changes, I recommend taking him to the vet for further evaluation. I hope he's feeling better soon!

My puppy has black stool, white gums, and no appetite. What's wrong?

It sounds like Euro is really sick. I would put a little Karo syrup or honey on his gums to ensure his blood sugar isn't too low. With his gums being white and his stool looks black I would strongly encourage to take him to your vet or local emergency clinic ASAP. He could be suffering for a GI bleed, a large number of intestinal parasites, a fatal virus like parvo or much more. With him being so small, he is likely dehydrated and Anemic. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon.
