Puppy sleepy after vet visit for vomiting/diarrhea, should I worry?

Sorry to hear that Bentley isn't feeling so hot. I guess the shot given to Bentley and the behavior to follow would completely depend upon what that shot is. If the shot was something to prevent further vomiting, then it was most likely something like Cerenia. This is an anti-vomiting drug that is usually very effective in accomplishing this unless there is a mechanical issue within the gastrointestinal tract. I have not heard of it causing any sort of sedation. It could just be that your puppy is a little exhausted from all the vomiting that she has been doing. Some of the flea medications depending on the one that was used can cause lethargy. I would find out which one was used and then ask if that was one of the listed side effects. Other than that, if there are no other clinical signs of concern right now and the vomiting has stopped, I wouldn't worry terribly at this point. Wait another 12 hours and see how Bentley is doing. If the condition does worsen before then, give your vet or an emergency vet a call. Hope this helps you out.

It always concerns me when young puppies get lethargic. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) than adult dogs, so diarrhea is more serious for Wallace than it would be for an adult dog. If he's back to acting normally, eating, drinking, and doesn't have further diarrhea or vomiting, it's perfectly fine to continue monitoring him at home. However, if he remains lethargic, has more mucousy diarrhea, begins to vomit, or refuses to eat or drink normal amounts, then you should have him examined by his vet. Your vet will need to do a physical exam. Depending on their suspicions based on their exam findings, they may recommend some diagnostic testing or may opt to start him on some medications. Possible causes of this type of issue include stomach upset from a virus, intestinal parasites, among many other issues. If your vet finds that Wallace is dehydrated, they'll also be able to give him some fluids. I hope that he feels better soon!

Poor puppy. That looks like digested food that he vomited up. He may have eaten something that he shouldn't have. Therefore I would try to fast him for 12 hours and then offer him small amounts of boiled chicken and plain rice. If he is still vomiting, lethargic, or has lack of appetite and diarrhea, then I would be concerned he may have either intestinal parasites or has contracted the deadly parvovirus. It is best to have him seen by your local veterinarian if he is not getting better. Hopefully he just got into something he shouldn't have and will show improvement within the next 12 to 24 hours. Puppy's getting sleepy after their shots is a normal reaction to vaccinations. They can also have a low grade fever and/or one bout of vomiting/diarrhea normally that are no cause for concern. The concern arises when your pet is severely lethargic, not eating, non-responsive, pale gums, or excessive vomiting/diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms then it is best to take puppy to a vet asap for immediate care, because a mores serious vaccine reaction is occurring at that point.

It sounds like it's time to take Blaze to the vet. Whenever we have severe diarrhea associated with vomiting or lethargy (sleeping more), it's worrisome. There could be a couple of things wrong with Tank. It could be that he is suffering from a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have intestinal worms, or could have a foreign body causing the diarrhea. It is concerning that he's acting lethargic, and given that he has now diarrhea for 24 hours and the bland diet isn't working (the lethargy shows he's not feeling better), I would say it's time for a vet visit. Give your vet a call first thing in the morning to get him seen. Best of luck.

Poor Kai! I'm sorry to hear that he isn't feeling well and I understand your concern! In some puppies with a significant burden of roundworms, vomiting and diarrhea can occur as a means of expelling the worms. This also can cause inappetence from nausea and mild lethargy as a result. Although rare, intussusception (essentially intestines that telescope into one another) can occur in cases of parasitism, which can cause vomiting, lethargy and inappetence. At this point, monitor Kai for changes tonight and try to tempt him to eat with boiled white meat chicken and white rice as a bland diet. If he is still lethargic and not eating by the morning, he should be examined by his vet. The greatest likelihood is simply that his body is working to expel the roundworms.
