Puppy lethargic, wobbly, not eating after roundworm meds. Normal?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, Khaleesi is too young to receive vaccinations. Typically vaccines are first given when the puppy is 8 weeks old. The dewormer for roundworms (if it was pyrantel) is given orally once every 2 weeks 3-4 times. Sometimes puppies that have a roundworm infection may become lethargic. Lethargy in puppies can be caused by a variety of other medical conditions as well including viral infections. If Khaleesi is lethargic, not eating, and just not herself, my best advice is to have her seen by her veterinarian for an exam just to be sure there is nothing else more concerning going on that would cause or contribute to her lethargy. Lelia not eating is a sign that she feels very bad and it's possible that it is related to a reaction from that dewormer although other causes are possible. The big concern is that she is very young and not eating. Puppies do not have the physical reserves of an adult dog. If she has not been eating since Monday then you need to take her in for an exam and medications to soothe her stomach. You don't want her to end up with low blood sugar and need a visit to the emergency clinic! If she will not eat her own puppy food, try warmed white meat chicken and plain white rice. This is not balanced but it will be fine for a few days. If she will not eat that, she is pretty sick. With young puppies, it's best to be cautious as they are fragile. Have her checked out today if possible.

I would not deworm him when he is not feeling well unless you have a specific diagnosis that he needs the dewormer (example: a fecal test was run and you know he has roundworms). I would wait until he is feeling better.

You should not feed your dog food that has worms in it. This would be a sign of decay, which could give your dog food poisoning. Please get fresh food for him (Kibble or canned). I would not eat this contaminated food either. Give him some boiled rice and boiled chicken today instead and observe him if he is still off-color tomorrow, then please take him to a veterinarian for an exam.

It is quite possible that he is nauseous from the medicine or he had a lot of worms which are now dying and that is causing him a tummy ache. Don;t feed him for 12 to 24 hours and then offer him some bland food such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken. Feed him small portions often. When he has regained his appetite he should be fine. There is a possibility that he will get diarrhea as well for a day or two as the body is going to try to get rid of the worms as quickly as possible.

First of all if you have found worms in his feces, that could be the reason for the symptoms, you should get him dewormed first thing. if deworming him does not solve the problem you will need to take him to the vet as he may be suffering from a bacterial/viral infection.

I am not sure the type of dewormer or the vaccines that you used but vomiting often, lethargy, and not eating are not typical 2-4 days after vaccination and deworming. It is very concerning that she is having these signs and she could have an infection or possibly have a parasite that was not susceptible to the dewormer that you used. She really should be seen by a vet to determine the cause and treat. She may need an anti-vomiting injection, antibiotic, antacid, gastrointestinal protectant, dewormer, and/or other medications to treat. You could try to find a clinic that would work out a payment plan or apply for care credit and have her seen. Hope she feels better soon!
