I think Florence would benefit from some joint supplements. I recommend dasuquin or flexadin with UC-II. If one alone doesn't help, you can also give both but you want to separate the two by 12 hours apart. Also, make sure you are giving her a high quality dog food which will have all the required vitamins and nutrients she needs. She will need to be on a puppy food until she is 10-12 months old. Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Joint medications will not help with the patellar luxation per se. However, it does help with the secondary osteoarthritis that can occur as an effect of patellar luxation. I do recommend this joint supplements for that reason. This is usually a surgical disease depending on its severity. Lucy in the sky with diamonds is an awesome name by the way! Good luck with your girl!

There are lots of good join supplements out there, most of them are a combination of glucosamine/chondroitin. Fish oil is also good to decrease inflammation in the joint. They are safe if there are no joint issues, but then they aren't really needed. Patellar luxation is pretty easy to diagnose by a vet on physical exam. Less severe cases, you can push the patella out of the groove manually. More severe cases, it gets locked out of place and causes the dog to limp.

Hello. I would definitely start Lonnie on a good glucosamine supplement like Dasuquin made by Nutramax. Adding a fish oil to her diet can reduce inflammation ( I like Nordic Naturals ), too. Do talk to your vet about adding an anti-inflammatory medication to make her comfortable, & possibly even Adequan injections to help maintain healthy, lubricated joints. My dog is limping. What are non-surgical options for patella luxation?

Typically, grade 1 luxations do not require surgery unless they become a frequent problem, progress or cause pain. Time will tell how your pup does. Yes, dogs can have shellfish allergies but it could also be something else in the supplement just causing her stomach to be upset. The best course of action is to avoid execessive hard exercise (daily jogging and heavy running every day) and to start her on a joint supplement. Try Dasuquin. If she does not tolerate that, try an injectable product like Adequan. An omega 3 fatty acid supplement will also be beneficial. I hope this helps.

If he is eating a good quality large breed puppy food, he should not need vitamin supplementation. How long does my pug need hip & joint supplements for his popping knee?

If this is a glucosamine supplement he should probably take it forever as long as he does not have any negative side effects like diarrhea or stomach upset since he will always have a luxating patella and be predisposed to developing arthritis. If your veterinarian recommended starting a supplement it would be best to see how long they would want Rascal to be taking the supplement since they know his individual case best.

Dasuquin with MSM and Cosequin DS Plus MSM (both by Nutramax Labs) are excellent products. I prefer these because it is the same company that makes the human product, Cosamin, and one of the few companies that submits its products for outside testing to verify ingredients. The GlycoFlex line of products would also be one to consider. These are my own personal recommendations.

Can my dog take cat joint supplements for luxating patella?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear that Tron has luxated patellas, and I hope they do not bother him much. It appears to me that there isn't anything in those toxic to dogs, and your veterinarian may use the cat version in order to have an easier dose for smaller dogs. That said, it would be a good idea to call your vet tomorrow and make sure they meant to script it this way and to make sure they are okay with you continuing the supplement as it is a script. What joint supplements prevent hip dysplasia in my German Shepherd?

Cosequin is a very good joint supplement for dogs. I'd also recommend Dasuquin. It's another good brand. If you are feeding Dasani a high quality dog food, you do not need to add vitamins to her diet. Too many vitamins can lead to toxicity. I hope this helps!
