What supplements can I give my puppy to prevent hip and joint issues?

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 6 days old | 70 lbs

Hi I have 4 months old st bernard.is there any kind of vitamins at stores that we give him to protect future hip and joint problems?

If he is eating a good quality large breed puppy food, he should not need vitamin supplementation. If you want to give him one, you can't go wrong with Pet Tabs ( https://www.zoetisus.com/products/dogs/pet-tabs.aspx ).
A joint supplement, such as Cosequin ( https://www.cosequin.com/ ) or Dasuquin ( https://www.dasuquin.com/en/products/ ), can also be started. Additionally, keep Brandy lean and active.

I do like supplementing with a high quality product containing glucosamine and omega fatty acids. Here's a good one.

Vets will have access to much more effective pain control options, and can also evaluate Babe's weight to make sure he's not putting excess stress on his joints.

Great question. The most important thing is to pick a good quality diet...either science diet, royal canin, iams, or Purina. I would recommend feeding large breed puppy. In addition, glucosamine and condroitin is great for the joints, especially in large breed. Good luck.

I think Florence would benefit from some joint supplements. I recommend dasuquin or flexadin with UC-II. If one alone doesn't help, you can also give both but you want to separate the two by 12 hours apart. Also, make sure you are giving her a high quality dog food which will have all the required vitamins and nutrients she needs. She will need to be on a puppy food until she is 10-12 months old. Do puppies need supplements for weight, strong bones, or joints?

Great question! Puppies should not need supplements as long as they are on a quality, balanced food. I am not sure what foods are available in Ghana, but I like Royal Canin, Purina One, Iams, or Science Diet/Hills. These diets are tested and their ingredients have the balanced vitamins and minerals Fierce needs. Make sure you are feeding a Large Breed Puppy formula until she is about 1 year of age. The bag will tell you how much to feed daily based on her age and weight. If you are training with treats, make sure she is still getting her recommended about of dog food and not too many treats. When to start dog hip and joint supplements & which ones are best?

I usually start dogs at risk when they are adults. I recommend Dasuquin Advanced. I would also start an Omega3 supplement to reduce any joint inflammation. Dasuquin with MSM and Cosequin DS Plus MSM (both by Nutramax Labs) are excellent products. I prefer these because it is the same company that makes the human product, Cosamin, and one of the few companies that submits its products for outside testing to verify ingredients. The GlycoFlex line of products would also be one to consider. These are my own personal recommendations.

Glucosamine and chondroitin will not prevent hip dysplasia. All those supplements do is promote joint health. It is recommended by most specialists to wait until the growth plates are closed before starting any supplements. This usually occurs within 10 months to one year of age.

Do large breed puppies need supplements for healthy bone development?

It is never recommended to give puppies multi vitamins and calcium supplements. This will affect Fang's growth adversely, and it is not needed. A good quality puppy food will provide all the nutrients he needs. I also advise again feeding him Orijen. It's grain free, and vets are seeing a link between dogs developing dilated cardiomyopathy who are on grain free diets. The FDA is now investigating that link. Grain free food is a fad, grains are actually good for dogs. I'd feed him a puppy food from brands such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. I hope this helps!
