My dog is limping. What are non-surgical options for patella luxation?

I have a 2.5 year old chow _ chihuahua , 3 weeks about when she went after the ball and came up limping in pain (no prior issue) . I have two questions involving this. vet said it was patella and to give glucosemine supplements. The ones we got are shellfish based and make he vomit. we tossed em , but are curious if dogs can have shellfish allergy? She improved after we tossed em. Also are there any non surgery options for grade 1 medial luxation ? Assuming that was diagnosed correctly.

Typically, grade 1 luxations do not require surgery unless they become a frequent problem, progress or cause pain. Time will tell how your pup does. Yes, dogs can have shellfish allergies but it could also be something else in the supplement just causing her stomach to be upset. The best course of action is to avoid execessive hard exercise (daily jogging and heavy running every day) and to start her on a joint supplement. Try Dasuquin. If she does not tolerate that, try an injectable product like Adequan. An omega 3 fatty acid supplement will also be beneficial. I hope this helps.

The best non-surgical advice I could give would be to keep Charlie lean. Obesity makes orthopedic disease worse. Starting him on a Veterinary approved glucosamine, like Dasuquin helps maintain joint help. Also Omgea 3 fish oils are frat for orthopedic issues as well as many other areas of the body.

There are other things like cold laser therapy and acupuncture if Charlie gets worse and you still want to avoid surgery.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Unfortunately, many times it is a congenital bone angle deformity that predisposed to patella luxation and surgical correction is really the only option to correct these cases. There are multiple ways of going about doing surgical correction of the luxation, depends on the surgeon. I hooe this helps guide you in the right direction. Hello. I would definitely start Lonnie on a good glucosamine supplement like Dasuquin made by Nutramax. Adding a fish oil to her diet can reduce inflammation ( I like Nordic Naturals ), too. Do talk to your vet about adding an anti-inflammatory medication to make her comfortable, & possibly even Adequan injections to help maintain healthy, lubricated joints. What joint supplements can I give my puppy with luxating patella?

I think Florence would benefit from some joint supplements. I recommend dasuquin or flexadin with UC-II. If one alone doesn't help, you can also give both but you want to separate the two by 12 hours apart. Also, make sure you are giving her a high quality dog food which will have all the required vitamins and nutrients she needs. She will need to be on a puppy food until she is 10-12 months old. Why does my chihuahua limp sometimes but run fine on all four legs?

It is very likely she has a condition called patellar luxation. This is where the ligament in the knee goes in an out of the socket. She can have this surgically repaired if it becomes a chronic issue and impedes on her quality of life. Otherwise joint supplements (i.e. Dasuquin) may be able to help reduce some inflammation and pain in the joint itself. Have your vet do a simple physical exam and check the knees. Patellar luxation is detectable by a physical exam and doesn't require radiographs to diagnose. I wish you well at the vet. Best wishes with Mindy and take care.

My dog is suddenly limping on a back leg. Is it a luxating patella?

It may be. She may have a soft tissue injury or some slight swelling at the knee which is causing the patella to luxate even though it has not been a problem in the past. Your veterinarian can most likely determine if that is the case by a physical exam. If her patella is loose and moving around, it is usually pretty easy to detect.

Hello, thank you for your question about Chispas. Some good exercises to help her recovery include physical therapy exercises such as moving her leg in a cycling motion for 5-10 minutes once a day. Additionally low impact exercises such as swimming will be helpful in keeping her muscles strong. I also recommend starting a joint supplement (one that has glucosamine and chondroitin) to help keep her joints healthy and prevent development of arthritis as she ages. In these cases I usually recommend 10-14 days of exercise restriction and then a slow return to exercise. I would start with a gradual return short walks around the neighborhood on the leash and work your way up to playing/running. With more activity it is possible that Chispas could have another case of limping. Hope this helps!

My dog's luxating patella: Does she need surgery on this leg?

If Stella is having difficulty walking/running, surgery may be indicated. Your vet will be able to grade the luxation by checking to see how far it moves out of the groove. She will then be able to determine whether or not surgery is necessary on this leg. Good luck! I hope Stella is feeling better soon.

My dog has a luxating patella. Is a knee brace a good idea for them?

Patellar luxation is an unusual sort of problem. Bracing won't help in this situation, as the problem is that the kneecap (the patella) slides back-and-forth across the surface of the knee joint and doesn't sit securely in the groove, as it should. Dogs can be mildly to severely affected by this problem. Those with a low grade (1 or 2) patellar luxation may exhibit intermittent lameness that usually resolves quickly, and may sustain some mild arthritis over time. Higher grade luxations (3 or 4) cause more long-term lameness, and with grade 4 luxations the dog may not be able to use the leg at all. Also, luxations of grade 3 and 4 tend to produce more substantial arthritis, and if your veterinarian has told you that your dog has a luxation of either 3 or 4, you should consider surgery to stabilize the joint and prevent further arthritis from occurring. The surgery is usually highly successfully in resolving the problem.
