Why is my dog's head shaking with a slight tremble? Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 22 lbs

My dog is shaking her head back and forth. It's not the type of shaking where a dog's ears are flopping. It's a slight tremble back and forth. It's hard to explain without a video, so if there's some way I can send you the video, that would be great.

This sounds like a neurological problem. It can be from and injury, epilepsy or an infection. You can put a video on YouTube and resend this question with the link. Also more of a description. Tell us if you are seeing this all the time or only certain times of the day. Your dog’s age and breed may help also. If this head shaking worsens then please take her in for an exam. Unfortunately, shaking is one of these clinical signs that we see in animals for a large variety of reasons. Sometimes, it can be an indication of a neurologic condition or a state that occurs after a seizure. Other times, it can be an indication of pain or discomfort. I have also seen animals shake when they are nauseous. Another very common cause of shaking in dogs, particularly smaller breed dogs, is fear and anxiety. Of all the things I have mentioned, I would say fear and pain seem to be the most common causes overall. The entire clinical picture would have to be taken into account when making a diagnosis. If the only thing you are seeing right now is shaking, I don't think you should rush out to the vet unless you know for sure that Puchy maybe consumed something toxic or is breathing labored.

Why is my dog's head shaking uncontrollably and preventing sleep?

Oh my. Poor guy. This sounds like muscle tremors and is a sign of a severe neurological abnormality that can be caused by a toxin ingestion, underlying brain/spinal cord tumor, or even an underlying metabolic imbalance (not as common). I would highly recommend taking KyCzar in to your vet to have him evaluated. Baseline bloodwork will likely be recommended and perhaps even a referral to a neurologist, if you wish to pursue further treatment and work-up. Unfortuantely there is not a good way to share videos using the free posting to the forum service. You will likely need to open up a private chat with an expert in order to share a video of your pet. But from the description, this sounds like potential muscle tremors or a neurological disorder for sure. I do hope that your fur baby is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Why is my dog's head shaking rapidly? Should I be concerned?

Unfortunately, that's hard to say what the cause is without being able to conduct a neurological exam. It could be indicative a permanent nerve damage, pain in the neck or a congenital condition. I recommend to record the behavior on video and then ask the neurologist to view the video. The neurologist is the best person to accurately answer your questions about Dodger. My dog shakes head excessively after spay. What could it be?

I would like to see a video of it. Wondering how long this is going on. I would consider complete neuro exam and possibly bloodwork. Could she had ingested something she should not? Did you apply OTC flea medicine on her skin? Is she on meds post surgery ? What is her vaccination history? Please do not hesitate to repost with more details and a video if possible. My dog shook, head tilted, limped, then recovered. What caused it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Peter! How old is Peter? The most common condition that causes trouble walking, falling over, head tilt and trembling is Vestibular disease. This is a problem with the balance center in either the brain or the inner ear. Possible causes are an ear infection, stroke, low thyroid, a brain tumor or if he is just old it can be idiopathic (meaning we don't know why). I have seen dogs become Vestibular and then be normal that quickly, though usually the signs can persist for up to 2 weeks. I am not sure about the relation to the food you are feeding. If he shows the symptoms again I would immediately take him to your Vet for an exam. Consider video taping it so you can show them in case it goes away quickly again. My dog has head tremors while sleeping. Should I take her to the vet?

If the episodes occur when Dawn is awake, then I would recommend having a veterinarian evaluate her. If she is having head tremors, it is important to determine if they are benign or seizure based (which can occur even if the rest of her body is not involved).
