Why is my 8-week puppy's green diarrhea not improving after vet?

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 1 day old | 4.5 lbs

I have a 8 week 3 day old puppy . We picked him up on thursday pm it is now Sunday pm.He has yellow diarheaa Thursday which the breeder said was stress and wormer. This turned to dark green liquid projectile faeces. Took pup to vets , they gave him Promax.no improvement , pup is playing , not dehydrated and drinking , but a bit sleepy . Any ideas of cause , and what next please?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. It is good that your puppy is still playful and drinking. Diarrhea in a puppy this age is very common as a direct cause of: parasites (even though a dewormer was given), abrupt change in diet, or viral infections of the intestinal tract. It is important that his feces are tested for parasites and possible viral infections (depending on his vaccination status) by your veterinarian as soon as he can be seen. Your veterinarian will also be able to provide medications for the diarrhea as well. Make sure you keep him eating and drinking, and continue to monitor carefully.

I'm sorry to hear Jasper isn't feeling well! I'd recommend having him examined by a veterinarian at this point. It's pretty common for puppies to have intestinal parasites that can cause diarrhea and this diarrhea can lead to dehydration (even if the puppy is still drinking). I'm also concerned that if Jasper does not eat his blood sugar will get too low as puppies have a harder time regulating their blood sugar level.

Make sure you try to bring a stool sample with you to the veterinary visit so it can be checked for parasites. You can try to offer Jasper a bland meal of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice until you can get to the veterinarian. However, I encourage you to go as soon as possible as it sounds like Jasper will need prescription medications to fully resolve the issue.

Thanks for the question. I'm glad to hear that Fenris is still playing and eating, but I am concerned that the stool is so watery. Yes, it is always possible that this is just a dietary issue, however because it has been going on for 4 days, and is so watery, I'm concerned that this is something infectious. At 11 weeks my main concern is parvovirus, however most of these pups act really sick, but it is still possible. Other possibilities are things like giardia, coccidia, or a viral infection. I recommend collecting a sample of the diarrhea in a bag or container and bringing it to a veterinarian for testing. They will be able to determine if there is a specific medication that is needed to fix the problem. Puppies this age don't have a lot of reserves, and can become dehydrated quickly. I'm happy that Fenris seems to be otherwise feeling okay so far, but I would feel better getting the diarrhea under control before it becomes a more serious problem. I hope Fenris is back to normal soon.

Worried: My playful puppy has diarrhea. Is it parvo or distemper?

Usually dogs with parvovirus or distemper are very lethargic and ill. If your dog is eating and drinking fine and has lots of energy then I don’t think the diarrhea is from either of those diseases. I do recommend a fecal exam soon, perhaps you can drop one off before your appointment to check for intestinal parasites that could cause diarrhea. Also I would monitor what she’s eating and check to make sure she’s not getting into things she shouldn’t in the yard. She’s a puppy and they love to eat anything! Should she become lethargic, stop eating or the diarrhea worsens then don’t wait, take her in to a veterinarian right away for treatment. My puppy has green diarrhea with black specs and is whining, help?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Murphy! Murphy is having diarrhea. It is common to have urgency and straining with diarrhea. It can make them uncomfortable and that is why they whine. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, he ate something gross that is upsetting his belly, new food/treat/table food, food allergy/intolerance, toxin ingestion. Since Murphy is only 13 weeks old, I would take him to your Vet when they open. Bring a stool sample with you so they can test it for parasites. They may want to test him for Parvo virus if he is not vaccinated. Most likely he will be sent home with medications and a bland diet. I hope this helps and I wish Murphy a speedy recovery!

Is my 9-week-old Labrador puppy's green diarrhea with mucus normal?

Since Charlie has been having abnormal stools for more than 2-3 days, I think medical intervention is needed at this time. I would be concerned about intestinal parasites and possibly parvovirus since he is so young and not fully vaccinated yet. I would recommend taking Charlie in to your vet and bringing a sample of his stool with you to be tested. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Xin evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings.
