Worried: My playful puppy has diarrhea. Is it parvo or distemper?

Hi, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to say whether Tucker's lethargy is due to illness or from the vaccine. When puppies his age are lethargic, have vomiting, and/or are having diarrhea, I always worry about the possibility they have parvo. Since Tucker has two of the three, I would highly recommend having him examined by a veterinarian and having a parvo test run as well as a fecal examination as soon as possible. The parasites could also be the culprit, but even if he doesn't have parvo, it is better to check and know for sure. Additionally, this will give the doctor a chance to give Tucker some supportive care, if needed, to help him through his illness. Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Kisses! My biggest concern is how young and small Kisses is. With severe watery diarrhea she is at an increased risk for dehydration and low blood sugar. Causes of diarrhea in puppies are: intestinal parasites, viral (parvo or distemper) or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new food/treat/table food. Sometime we never know the exact cause. Since she is so young and small I would take her to the Vet today. If you can get a stool sample bring it with you. If she isn't up to date on vaccines they may test her for parvo virus. The Vet can send her home with medications to make her better faster. I hope this helps and I wish Kisses a speedy recovery!

I recommend that you have Daisy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Puppies commonly get gastrointestinal infections from parasites and bacteria that can cause this to happen. We always worry about Parvo virus in puppies, but it causes bloody stool, so hopefully this won't be the case for Stella. If he is still active and eating/drinking, then this is likely not an emergency, but he should be seen by a vet within the next 24 hours. Hello. If you are concerned about parvo, blood may not appear in the diarrhea for another day or so. If he continues to have vomiting & diarrhea, Justice will become dehydrated & this will make him very, very weak. Vomiting and diarrhea have many causes including intestinal worms, inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. Usually, in puppies, we worry about intestinal parasites, infection (parvo/coronavirus), foreign body ingestion or dietary indiscretion. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound can be done to try to determine what is going on. Puppies should be dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age and then every 2-3 weeks. This should be done multiple times and should continue for 3-4 times after weaning. When puppies nurse, they continue to get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother. Good luck

Even though he has had vaccines, given his age, he is not completely done with his vaccines and can still get infected with some of these diseases such as parvovirus. I advice that you have Kilo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least, they can start him on anti-diarrhea medications and something for nausea as his loss of appetite could be from nausea. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to avoid dehydration. Good luck with your pup!
