My dog's in heat, sleeping. Is she in pain? How long? How to help?

She may though become less playful perhaps at the beginning though she should come around fairly quickly. If no improvement is observed, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. It is possible but since Piper can’t talk, and I can’t preform a physical exam, I can’t say for sure. Back pain, gut pain or a bladder infection are all possible. I recommend to be safe and have her seen by her veterinarian. If she checks out normally, a heating pad applied to her lower abdomen may help-make sure it’s not too hot though, pets can get burned! The doctor can also prescribe pain medication safe for dogs. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Pain is not common during a dog's heat cycle, however hormonal changes can cause some behavioral changes in dogs while they are in heat. If she is appearing in pain or is having odd symptoms in addition to her heat cycle it is best to have a veterinarian exam her. Do NOT give any over the counter medications without veterinary instruction as they could harm or make Panda very ill. If you do not wish to have puppies, having Panda spayed after her heat cycle is finished may be beneficial.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Snow! Most dogs handle their heat cycles fine. Some dogs have a decreased appetite and are lethargic while others are hyperactive. There are no need for medications as they shouldn't be painful. Just always have her on a leash and do not let her outside a lone or around intact males dogs. I would have her spayed 2 months after the bleeding stops. Hello, The heat cycle in a dog can last from 2-4 weeks. It should not be painful like menstruation often is in humans. I would advise against giving tylenol to dogs, as its effects generally range from ineffective to toxic in the canine species. If she is in pain, I'd recommend having her seen by her veterinarian to determine the cause and a better treatment. I hope this is helpful. Poor girl. Some dogs have a tougher time than others when it comes to their first heat cycle. However she does seem to bra late bloomer as most dogs have their first heat cycle around 6-10 months. If she is this ill I would recommend having her to examined by your vet to make sure she isn't having any complications or other underlying illness that's causing this. If she is found to have a ln abnormally intense heat cycle, then the vet can prescribe some safe pet friendly pain medicaiton for her to get for the next few days until the brunt of her menstrual cycle has passed. In the meantime I try placing a warm compress on her belly for a few minutes (be very careful not to leave on too long or you can easily burn your pets skin) to help ease some of the discomfort. hope she feels better soon!

I would keep on hand some doggy diapers to help collect the bloody discharge. This will help protect your furniture and household items from getting stained. You can also stock up on some puppy wipes to help clean her up and keep her from developing odors. The menstrual cycle usually lasts 2-4 weeks on average. Best of luck with your pet Nala.
