Puppy fell, barks in pain. Is he hurt or just scared of me now?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 30 days old | 21 lbs

I was carrying my let puppy in my hands and suddenly I tripped and he fell off from my hands. He started barking in pain and ran off to his usual spot where he sleeps and now he is not even letting me touch him. As soon as I touch his he barks in pain. And he isnt coming towards me. Im sure he wasnt injured but why is he behaving like this? How long will it take for him to come near me without fear. (This is first time ever he has barked)

Based on his responses he could be in pain. When an animal Berks they are letting you know that something is either painful or fearful to them. I would encourage you to at least get him examined to make sure and absolutely certain that he doesn't have an internal injury that you just may not see on the outside.
If he is just fearful it may take them a week or two at the most special if you work with him every day with enjoyable activities and positive reinforcement. Coax him out with some favorable treats and show him extra attention daily. Eventually he will come around, especially if you all had a close bond up until this incident. Best wishes!
