Puppy fell, barks in pain. Is he hurt or just scared of me now?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bailey! I think Bailey may be in pain after the fall. He could have injured his back or neck and is afraid to go down the stairs because it hurts. Crying out randomly is common when dogs are in pain especially when their back and necks are injured. I would have Bailey seen by your Vet to see if he is truly in pain or traumatized behaviorally from the Hurricane. If there is no medical issue he may need to be started on anti-anxiety medications and re-training. I hope this helps and I wish Bailey a speedy recovery!

Ouch, poor Beau! He could have hurt his back in the fall, and that's why he's not being playful at the moment. I would rest him overnight, no jumping, playing, or running. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he's still not his normal self in the morning, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

I will copy and paste my previous response with a little tid bit at the end since this seems to be a repeat question that was duplicated on the message board and my previous answer was deemed helpful. He is likely scared now. He will soon come to terms with what happened and likely go back to his normal self after a few days to a week. If he is not whimpering in pain, having any neurological signs (drunken walk, twitching of the pupils, excessive panting, or inability to move his head to one side) or refusing food and water consecutively, then I wouldn't be too concerned. He is likely just still scared that it will happen again. However if he is still holding his tail awkwardly after a day or two, then its best to have him seen by your veterinarian to ensure there are no serious underlying injuries there. However this is unlikely because he is able to wag it intermittently with no problems. Best of luck!

He is probably still sore. If he’s playful and eating I would just give him a few more days to heal. Puppies generally heal quickly. If the pain continues more than another few days or he’s not acting right please take him in for an exam and treatment. Even though Stella didn't react when you were feeling her back and her legs she may have still had a soft tissue injury or bruising that is causing minor pain. If the behavior continues I'd recommend having her examined by your vet to make sure there is no injury to be concerned about.

I recommend to have Banjo examined by the veterinarian. This behavior sounds like something is hurting him though high anxiety could also look like this. The problem is that Banjo cannot talk and tell you what he is feeling so you need to have him examined to make sure it's not pain. Pain could be anywhere in his body but common conditions include a disc problem in the neck/spine, a pinched nerve or pancreatitis. After the physical exam, the doctor will have a better idea of what to do next. I hope this helps.

yes, any possible head/neck injury is always concerning and non weight bearing lameness combined with the poor balance causing him to fall over are all red flags for a possible serious fracture. Please have him fully assessed buy a vet urgently, it is possible he will require xrays to rule out broken bones
