Puppy fell off bed, now tucks tail. Is he scared or injured?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I know you feel bad! We see this happen a lot, puppies and kittens are very squirmy! I would say that 98% of the time the puppies are fine. If she is walking well and not limping, is playing and eating I think she falls in to the category! She still may be a bit sore and that is why her tail isn't wagging. I would watch her closely and I bet she will be 100% very soon! I hope this helps and good luck!

Based on his responses he could be in pain. When an animal Berks they are letting you know that something is either painful or fearful to them. I would encourage you to at least get him examined to make sure and absolutely certain that he doesn't have an internal injury that you just may not see on the outside. If he is just fearful it may take them a week or two at the most special if you work with him every day with enjoyable activities and positive reinforcement. Coax him out with some favorable treats and show him extra attention daily. Eventually he will come around, especially if you all had a close bond up until this incident. Best wishes!

The fact he is walking normally now likely means nothing is broken. I would rest him for 2-3 days. If the limping returns take him to the vet, otherwise he should be fine! Puppies are very resilient so Pi is probably fine. He would show a problem right away if he was injured. He certainly can get injured from falling so I would make sure he isn’t able to fall off the bed again or from someone’s arms. He could get a head or neck injury or break a bone so please be careful. Poor Tiki! It's possible that he could be injured. It's also possible that he is still agitated and scared from his encounter with the dog - it often takes cats 48 hours or more to calm down after a scary event like this. The safest option would be to take him to the vet for an exam in case he may be injured. If his exam is normal, then I would recommend leaving him alone for the next few days to give him a chance to calm down and feel comfortable again.

Every dog is a little different as I am sure you know. Each will form her own personality, idiosyncratic behaviors, and preferential relationships. With this uniqueness is going to come a certain level of uncertainty in situations like you've described above. Some dogs will forget about something like you've described almost immediately while others seem to take it to the grave. The vast majority fall somewhere in between. I don't know how long it has been already, but the first thing I would do if you have not as of yet is to have the tail examined medically for any sign of continuing pain. If there is, this is going to be a continued reminder for Eva of what has happened to her. Once the pain is controlled, the reason for causing the pain becomes less fresh in their mind (at least that is what I think, some other vets may say I am anthropomorphizing dogs and cats a little more than they deserve). If you are able to determine that pain is not playing a role in the problem, the best you are going to be able to do is prevent the same thing from happening again. Once you feel Eva has healed mentally from this event and is ready, desensitizing her to doors and areas that trigger her anxiety may be in her best interest. This is something that should be done slowly and any positive outcomes should be rewards vigorously. Hope this all makes sense. Let me know if I can help in any other way.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So if he is limping, he is in pain. Shaking is another sign of pain. The question is how much pain and why? Is it a minor, short-lived pain like when you stub your toe? A sprain? Or did he break a bone? The only way to know is to see an emergency vet and take some x-rays. That being said, in most of these cases, they shake it off and are walking normally within a few hours. If he seems OK to you, it is completely reasonable to let him sleep tonight and if he is not himself by morning, then see the vet first thing. If he is worrying you or any other signs arise, you always have the option of heading to the emergency vet tonight. Under no circumstances do I recommend any human pain medication - most are unsafe in dogs. However, if you want to do something for pain, ice can be a tremendous help. Applying an ice pack (wrapped in a thin kitchen towel or paper towel) to the leg for 5 minutes every 4-8 hours is great for inflammation and pain. Best wishes to you and Uno!
