My puppy is sick for 2 days and ate pine cones. What should I do?

My puppy about 9 months old has been sick 2 days. I've found some chewed up pine cones in my yard. What should I do?

Thank you for your questions about Pippy. Many things can make pet's have an upset stomach: parasites, new foods/treats, viral infections, eating something they shouldn't have, toxins, organ disease or even intestinal blockage.
The pine cones will generally only cause a problem if they are ingested. They will cause a blockage and this typically appears as vomting, not wanting to eat and being lethargic. The main concern I see if how small Pippy is. Small breed puppies are prone to low blood sugar (which is an emergency) so you really have to make sure they are eating and drinking normally.
I generally recommend any pet that has been sick beyond 24 hours to see a veterinarian and that whats I recommend to Pippy too. She's been sick for 2 days and she is very small.
Try to get her seen today and bring in a stool sample. The doctor will likely check her for more common reasons like parasites but may recommend further diagnostics.
Also, switch her to a bland diet of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% plain boiled white rice. Feed her this for a few days as it will help to intestines to relax more.

Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn’t stop, see your veterinarian. Restrict access to pine needles to prevent future episodes of diarrhea.

My puppy is eating pine bark and needles. Is this dangerous?

Pine needles and bark are not toxic, but the needles contain some oil that can cause irritation to the the stomach. You may see a decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If these occur for longer than 24 hours, Luna should see a vet for treatment. If she eats a large amount of bark and/or pine needles, it could cause more severe damage internally and potentially cause painful constipation. If she seems in distress when trying to have a bowel movement, she should see a vet for treatment. I would try to prevent her from eating this. You can try to fence off the shrub, take Luna out on a leash, or remove the shrub. It is possible that she will outgrow it, but this breed tends to get themselves into trouble by eating inappropriate things for several years!

He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 8 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 4-6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

My puppy ate sticks, won't eat, lethargic. Should I see a vet?

Her stomach may be upset because of eating the sticks, because of the diet change, a combination of both, there's no way to tell just from her symptoms. It may be that there is a piece of the stick still inside causing an obstruction or pain. I recommend getting her in to see your vet for an exam, possibly x-rays, right away if she starts vomiting again, develops diarrhea, continues to refuse food, and/or continues to be lethargic. If there is an obstruction or perforation somewhere in her GI tract, getting her sooner ir better than later, as this condition could require surgery.

I am really concerned about Pumkin head, especially since she has vomited up underwear and is continuing to act ill. One of my biggest concerns is that she could have something stuck in her intestines causing a blockage or obstruction. This is a surgical emergency, because something in the intestines has the potential to cause rupture of the intestines. The best way to diagnose this is with abdominal x-rays. If there is anyone who can help you out financially, bringing her to an emergency veterinarian right away is ideal. If you absolutely cannot, please ensure she has plenty of access to water. You may try offering her small amounts of a highly digestible diet, such as boiled chicken and boiled rice. I hope this is helpful - sorry to hear that she is so sick.

My puppy ate wood, threw up, and now won't eat. What should I do?

Poor Blanco! Puppies often eat things they aren't supposed to, including wood, and sometimes it passes on it's own. It's good that he is having normal bowel movements, and has no signs of blood in his poor or mouth. It could be that his stomach is still upset from eating the wood, or there could still be pieces of wood in his GI system. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Continue to monitor his poop for signs of wood, and monitor his overall behavior. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, vomits the bland diet, becomes very lethargic, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or has blood in his stool, he will need to see a vet right away.
