My puppy has diarrhea and vomiting. Is it from milk or rice?

Food intolerances are not very common for dogs to get and it would be even more rare for rice to be the cause. Food intolerances are due to certain proteins which are usually animal proteins (beef, pork, dairy, etc.). To find the actual protein Max is allergic to, you would have to do an elimination trial. Make sure that there is no possibility of this happening - especially if there are kids in the house. As always, it's best to do these things in consultation with your vet. They can also ensure that nothing else is responsible for the diarrhea. It is definitely possible that the vomiting and diarrhea is due to a long-standing infection. If Max has any of the following, the he should see a vet as soon as possible: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Dog starts acting very depressed 4) Dog stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. It's possible the change in food could be causing digestive upset. The best way to start transitioning to solids is to make a slurry of their regular milk replacer that they've already been on combined with a little bit of the puppy food. This helps make it easier to digest without being too big of a change and may help settle their stomachs. Checking for any parasites with a fecal exam and deworming may also help, however if the vomiting or diarrhea continues, a vet checkup to rule out anything more serious is best.

Poor Bailey! Withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I would just give him a small dose of plain white boneless skinless chicken and white rice to help settle his tummy. If he is acting lethargic or continues to have vomiting or diarrhea, I would have a vet take a look at him. Small dogs like him can quickly get dehydrated. Most pets do not handle milk well and it will cause diarrhea so I would recommend discontinuing giving milk and other human foods, especially if they are causing diarrhea. If you think Ginger may have some tummy upset, you can pick up all food and offer a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken, before returning her to her regular diet. Be sure she is being fed a puppy food that is balanced and nutritious to ensure she is doing well. Having her stool checked for parasites, or taking her in for a vet exam if the diarrhea continues is best, as parasites, illness and other causes can also cause prolonged diarrhea and require treatment to resolve.
