Why is my puppy still sick with diarrhea and vomiting after deworming?

Poor pups. While a heavy parasite load can cause severe GI upset, and anemia which can cause a pup to become extremely lethargic, have bloody diarrhea, etc, I would also want to rule out underlying illnesses as a possibility. It would be best to bring them to a vet ASAP especially if they are lethargic or unable to keep any food or water down as puppies can quickly become very dehydrated. They may also need supportive care such as an IV or injected medications if they are very ill from the parasites or other causes. You can try continuing to offer water, or rubbing a little honey on their gums for energy until you can get to the vet, however due to the severity of symptoms it would be best to seek emergency care.

Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!

Some pets may need multiple deworming to get rid of all the worms. You must also make sure you have the correct type of dewormer. Some worms are not able to be seen with the naked eye. If Nala has not had her stool examined under a microscope by the veterinarian, I recommend to have this done as it is the most accurate method. Additionally certain heartworm prevention’s can also provide a monthly deworming and can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Your puppy may have to take a second round of wormer approximately 2 to three weeks after the first. Considering your puppy was severely infected with round worms (if you can see them= severe infection) these worms likely laid a lot of eggs which now have turned into larvae/worms and were not hit by the first round of the wormer. This should then hopefully alleviate the diarrhea.

The death of the worms can cause an obstruction. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Aurora-what a lovely name! I bet she's a cute little thing :) We typically recommend repeating deworming treatment every 3 weeks (21 days) in young pups as the deworming medication only acts on certain life-stages of the worms living inside the dog. If Aurora has a heavy worm burden inside you can expect to see some dead/almost dead worms passing in her stool-this is normal. If Aurora continues to have diarrhea a checkup with your regular vet would be recommended. Whilst internal parasites can be a common cause of soft stool in young dogs there can be a myriad of other possible causes, including coccida, parvo virus and inappropriate diet.

Dogs will frequently develop diarrhea from a diet change which is why it is recommended to slowly transition your pet from one food to another. Since worms have been ruled out, it is likely that this is your pup's issue, although there may be many reasons for diarrhea including infection, allergies and other disorders. If the diarrhea does not resolve in another day or two, you should take her back to your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of the diarrhea.
