Why does my new dog still have diarrhea after vet visit & diet change?

I got her a few days ago and she has had diarrhea since I've had her I took her to the vet and they did a fecal exam but everything was negative. The people I had bought her from had started her on pedigree and then switched her to ol Roy and when I picked her up they said they wasn't sure what food she was on now?! So I had her examined and put her on royal canin as per the veterinarian suggestion and it's been 2 days and she still has diarrhea. She had her first shots 2 days ago and wormed

Dogs will frequently develop diarrhea from a diet change which is why it is recommended to slowly transition your pet from one food to another. Since worms have been ruled out, it is likely that this is your pup's issue, although there may be many reasons for diarrhea including infection, allergies and other disorders. If the diarrhea does not resolve in another day or two, you should take her back to your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of the diarrhea.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your puppies. I recommend going back to their original diet. They will also need to see their veterinarian for fecal testing. Diet and intestinal parasites are the most common causes of diarrhea in young puppies. Other gastrointestinal tract infections can be to blame though. This is why fecal testing is important. Common causes of diarrhea in a puppy include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. I would recommend having Luna evaluated by a vet to determine what could be going on and which treatments are needed.

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. If this continues, I recommend that you have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

We can have diarrhea due to stress (of a move to new home) or diet changes, however in young dogs we also worry about intestinal parasites (both worms and Protozoa that aren't killed by deworming) and in some cases depending on vaccine status parvovirus. For this reason it is best to have your pup checked at the vet and bring a stool sample for them to test. Until then you can pick up a probiotic for dogs at the vet or pet store and try feeding plain cooked white rice and boiled shredded chicken breast for a day or two.

The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. Why is my dog's diarrhea green after recent roundworm deworming?

It is possible that if your dog had a severe round worm problem, all the dead worms now are causing the intestine to try and get rid of them as fast as possible. This is achieved by diarrhea. I would wait for another day to see whether it goes away by itself. If not, then I suggest you withhold food for about 12 hrs and then feed some bland food (boiled rice and boneless chicken) for a day and then slowly transition back to his normal food. If that does not clear it up, it is time for a vet visit.

Why is my 5-week-old puppy vomiting and has diarrhea after new food?

It's possible the change in food could be causing digestive upset. The best way to start transitioning to solids is to make a slurry of their regular milk replacer that they've already been on combined with a little bit of the puppy food. This helps make it easier to digest without being too big of a change and may help settle their stomachs. Checking for any parasites with a fecal exam and deworming may also help, however if the vomiting or diarrhea continues, a vet checkup to rule out anything more serious is best.
