Puppy threw up dewormer, sick, vomiting, diarrhea. What should I do?

Hi,t hanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dewowmers have the potential to cause an upset stomach such as vomit, diarrhea and decreased appetite. Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!

Poor pup! No, this isn't normal at all - I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet today if at all possible. Vomiting blood with pale gums indicates a serious, life-threatening problem. I would be concerned that he may have parvo or some other serious problem such as an intestinal obstruction, as the dewormer would not cause these symptoms. The emergency vet can do a parvo test or other testing if needed to help determine what's wrong and get him started on appropriate treatment right away.

Ideally he should be seen by a vet to stabilise his condition and correct dehydration as well as supplemental feeding and a full health check to rule out additional illnesses reducing his appetite. Consider surrendering him to your local shelter to get him the best care. In the meantime an oral worm dose carefully dosed for his weight from your vets office or pet store, pedialyte and a mousse textured high calorie recovery or puppy food is recommended

It's not advised to give him deworming when he is vomiting, because it will likely just be vomited up. Worms can get in the stomach (not their usual place) and cause vomiting, but they don't tend to cause them to suddenly get weak. It's possible that some other infection (like parvo virus) is happening and the appearance of the worm was just a coincidence. Puppies that vomit a great deal can quickly become dehydrated, which will cause them to get weak. In order to keep Chopper from having life-threatening complications, it's best to take him to the vet for an evaluation and treatment as soon as possible. For now, only feed small amounts of bland food and make sure he has plenty of clean water. You can add rehydration salts to the water to help treat the dehydration. It is not normal that Pig has a steady blood flow from her behind, and it could be the heavy burden of worms, but it could be something more serious such as parvovirus. I would consider this a medical emergency, and I strongly urge you to take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

I am concerned Mooshi may have a serious viral infection as well as an abundant of worms. Since he is so small and easily dehydrated I would strongly encourage to take him to your vet for an exam. Your vet can assess his hydration, do a fecal to figure out the type of worms and dewormer he needs and whether he needs any additional medicine to combat the vomiting, lethargy and diarrhea. I am not sure the type of dewormer or the vaccines that you used but vomiting often, lethargy, and not eating are not typical 2-4 days after vaccination and deworming. It is very concerning that she is having these signs and she could have an infection or possibly have a parasite that was not susceptible to the dewormer that you used. She really should be seen by a vet to determine the cause and treat. She may need an anti-vomiting injection, antibiotic, antacid, gastrointestinal protectant, dewormer, and/or other medications to treat. You could try to find a clinic that would work out a payment plan or apply for care credit and have her seen. Hope she feels better soon!
