My puppy has diarrhea with slime. Should I take her to the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 month and 29 days old | 65 lbs

Hi, Thatcher has been having diarrhea for the past 2-3 days. We stopped feeding her treats (her greenies and jerked) to see if that would help, but it hasn't. Her diarrhea has gotten worse, and it is now coupled with clear looking slime as well as regular diarrhea. She is a puppy still, and I know that these things happen, but since it's been over the span of several days I just wanted to see if maybe there was something that needed treatment.

If she is tired or unwell then yes she should be seen by your vet. Otherwise, a bland diet such as boiled skinless chicken and rice or an intestinal canned diet with additional probiotics such as fortiflora or canikur can help the gut to rebalance and repair. Ensure she is up to date with deworming treatments also as intestinal parasites can contribute to diarrhea and colitis

It could be the bully stick has upset her stomach. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

Skeena is a cutie and I'm sorry to hear that she's had so much diarrhea! Possible causes of diarrhea in a young dog include viruses, parasites, gastroenteritis from eating different foods or treats, or parvovirus (highly unlikely if she was fully vaccinated). Since Skeena otherwise seems normal, you can first try a home remedy. Start by withholding food for 12-24 hours, then offer small frequent meals of a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days. After the diarrhea resolves, gradually transition back to her normal puppy food by mixing the two foods together over 5-7 days. If Skeena's diarrhea worsens, she starts vomiting, becomes lethargic or stops eating, she will need to go to her vet for further evaluation. I hope that all goes well!

Diarrhea can be caused by many things including stress, diet changes, and infections, and your vet will be able to help differentiate what's going on and start her on medication if needed. Poor Morticia! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. I hope Morticia starts feeling better quickly! The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. My 9-week-old puppy has diarrhea for a week. Should I go to vet?

Poor pup! No, it's not normal for her to have diarrhea, especially if it's been going on for a week now. I would be concerned that she may have an intestinal parasite of some kind, or possibly an infection causing the diarrhea. I would recommend taking her to the vet today if you can for an exam - he/she can do a fecal exam to check for parasites or other problems, and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat the diarrhea depending on what is found.
