My puppy has diarrhea with mucus. When should I worry and see a vet?

Poor Daisy. The white mucus can be caused by inflammation of the large intestine. If she has been having diarrhea for more than 24 hours, then it's time to have her seen by a vet. Should it be less than 24 hours, I can give you a home remedy for her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

If she is tired or unwell then yes she should be seen by your vet. Otherwise, a bland diet such as boiled skinless chicken and rice or an intestinal canned diet with additional probiotics such as fortiflora or canikur can help the gut to rebalance and repair. Ensure she is up to date with deworming treatments also as intestinal parasites can contribute to diarrhea and colitis

We can not prescribe medications on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach as the laws require a vet to examine an animal in order to do so. I am glad that Coco is eating, I would start him on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. This bland diet helps bind up the stool and usually helps the diarrhea. You can also start a dog probiotic, I like Purina Fortiflora. I would also deworm him with pyrantal pamoate or panacur. If the diarrhea started after starting the neopeptine and/or the liv52 I would stop them. I personally do not use human supplements in pets and urge caution in doing so. If the bland diet and probiotic doesn't help Coco needs to be examined by a Vet near you. I hope this helps and I wish Coco the very best!

While it's impossible to know for sure (because the underlying cause is not known at this time), if Nipsy is bright, playful, eating well, drinking well and not having any blood in the stool, then these are generally good signs. If Nipsy is depressed, not eating well, not drinking well or has blood in the stool, I recommend to have him examined today. You may feed Nipsy a bland diet which may help with the diarrhea until he is examined. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. Please, put Nellie on a bland diet for 2-3 days (cooked chicken or other lean meat with rice or pasta) and get her a probiotic. You can buy probiotics for dogs over-the-counter at pet shops, local vets or online. If the diarrhoea does not resolve in 3-4 days time or Nellie starts to vomit or act unwell, please take her to your local vets for an appointment.

I'm sorry to hear that Lola isn't feeling well. Obviously, taking her to the vet for an exam would be the ideal scenario, but given your current circumstances, I understand that that might not be possible. Diarrhea can be caused by a multitude of different issues, including parasites, an upset stomach from a virus, eating something unusual, or other internal diseases. Since Lola is still drinking some water, I would encourage her to drink a bit more by putting a small amount of low sodium chicken broth in her water. Just be sure to change the bowl every few hours so that it doesn't spoil. You can also give her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice to try to help settle her stomach. At only 5 pounds, she should eat a total of 1/2 cup of this mixture per day, so divide that into 3-4 smaller meals. However, if she refuses to eat or drink, begins to vomit, or becomes more lethargic, you'll have to seek emergency veterinary care. I would take Snowball back to your vet, since it's been going on for three days and hasn't resolved with a bland diet. They will likely prescribe medication for the diarrhea so that it will clear up more quickly.
