My Maltipoo has diarrhea. What can I do if I can't see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Maltipoo | Female | spayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 5 lbs

Maltipoo has had diarrhea for 3 days (normal color but runny) Drinks water with syringe. Tired but still walking around, not as active as usual. We are in TX so hard to see vet right now.

I'm sorry to hear that Lola isn't feeling well. Obviously, taking her to the vet for an exam would be the ideal scenario, but given your current circumstances, I understand that that might not be possible. Diarrhea can be caused by a multitude of different issues, including parasites, an upset stomach from a virus, eating something unusual, or other internal diseases. Since Lola is still drinking some water, I would encourage her to drink a bit more by putting a small amount of low sodium chicken broth in her water. Just be sure to change the bowl every few hours so that it doesn't spoil. You can also give her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice to try to help settle her stomach. At only 5 pounds, she should eat a total of 1/2 cup of this mixture per day, so divide that into 3-4 smaller meals. However, if she refuses to eat or drink, begins to vomit, or becomes more lethargic, you'll have to seek emergency veterinary care. I hope that the bland diet helps her and that she's feeling better soon!

Poor girl. If she had bloat she would be very ill right now. She wouldn’t be playful, and she would be barely reponsive and throwing up everything she ingests including water. She likely just has an upset stomach and ate more food than can go down in a reasonable amount of time. Continue to monitor her for continued vomiting and the symptoms mentioned above. But it is likely she will recover if she is just overfed. Just try to refrain from feeding her a meal for the next 12 hrs to allow her stomach to empty. She should be fine if she eats tomorrow with no vomiting and passes a stool tonight. Best of luck to you and take care.

Hello. Give Bella's stomach a chance to heal by not feeding her for several hours. If she feels like eating a little later this evening, offering a bland diet of 25% cooked chicken or hamburger, & 75% white rice or low fat cottage cheese. Just offer a tablespoon at a time. If the vomiting persists into tomorrow, you should see your vet to start treatment if necessary. I hope she is feeling better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Is there is any chance Mollie could have eaten something (a toy, etc) that could cause a blockage? If you think so, I would take her to the vet soon to have her evaluated. The vet will most likely want to perform x-rays to look for a foreign body. If you don't think she got into anything out of the ordinary she may be suffering from gastroenteritis. This can be cause by a change in diet, eating people food, stress or intestinal parasites. If you can't get her to the vet soon you could try to withhold food for about 24 hours or try feeding her something bland and easily digestible (like plain boiled chicken) and see if that helps settle her tummy. If you've tried these things and she's still vomiting and have diarrhea I would recommend taking her to see your vet.

Milo is ridiculously cute!! My main concern is that he start drinking. You can offer water with a little chicken broth in it. (But always make sure there is fresh water too.) Start a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. Try a bland diet (half plain boiled/canned chicken half plain cooked white rice) for a few days and I expect the diarrhea to improve after 1-3 days. (Then transition back to her regular diet slowly over 3-5 days.) If at ANY time he is lethargic, vomiting, not wanting to eat, or you have other concerns, you need to go to the vet clinic right away to make sure it’s nothing more serious. My dog is sick: not eating, diarrhea, and throwing up. What to do?

Poor girl. Dolly sounds like she has a severe illness going on. She could potentially even have pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas that is more common in smaller breed dogs. I would highly recommend getting her seen by your vet asap for a pancreatitis test and bloodwork to get an overall health assessment so that we know what medication she needs specifically to get her feeling better. When pets are ill, it is almost impossible to force them to eat, especially if they are nauseous, so it's imperative to get her seen right away. If you are not able to get her in today, then you can offer her some boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese, but it is best to get her seen quickly so that her condition doesn't get any worse. I do hope that Dolly is able to make a full and speedy recovery soon! Best wishes an take care.

My Maltese dog keeps pooping diarrhea, when should I see a vet?

Poor Kapo! There are so many causes for diarrhea including parasites, toxins, foreign bodies, sudden change of foods, pancreatitis, table foods, bacterial or viral infections and much more. Since Kapo is such a small dog, I would have your vet take a look at him so he doesn't become any more dehydrated. Your vet will be able to do a fecal, bloodwork and even x-rays if needed. They will get him started on the proper medicine to help the diarrhea and give him fluids if needed. I hope this helps!

Poor Morticia! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. I hope Morticia starts feeling better quickly! If Mila is drinking, offer unflavored PediaLyte or similar sugar free electrolyte solution. A bland diet should be fed as well. This can be plain white rice mixed 1:1 with one of the following: boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast, ground turkey, ground beef (cooked/drained) or cottage cheese. You can serve it warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate her appetite. Feed until the stool is normal before slowly transitioning to a quality puppy food.

My Shih Tzu has runny diarrhea but seems fine. Should I worry?

Hello! I wouldn’t be too worried about lily at this point. if she is otherwise feeling good, I might try her on a very bland diet for a few days. An example of a bland diet would be boiled skinless chicken breast and steamed white rice (1 part chicken to 2-3 parts rice). If the diarrhea is persisting or if her appetite decreases or if she begins vomiting then I would have her veterinarian evaluate her. It would be a good idea to bring a sample of her stool in if the diarrhea continues so her vet can screen for intestinal parasites. I hope lily is back to herself very soon!

My puppy has diarrhea with mucus. When should I worry and see a vet?

I hate to hear Chicken Noodle is not feeling well! Yes, this can be a side effect of the medication but other causes are also possible. I recommend to start by calling your veterinarian. They will ask you several questions and help to determine if the medication should be continued or if additional care is needed. There are a couple things you can do at home that may also help. A bland diet for 48 hours can help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A probiotic may also be beneficial. Purina carries a nice one called FortiFlora if you can find it. Your vet will also have a nice one as well. You can add additional water to her food to help prevent dehydration. At home, your pup should rest today so no walks or playtime. I hope Chicken Noodle starts feeling better quickly! Please feel free to post any additional questions.
